The Voluntiers- Winners of Best Windows App at BattleHack Miami

This past weekend I had the pleasure of witnessing a great sight, a room of fifty people or so all programming 24 hours straight in order help the community at BattleHack Miami.  The premise for the hackathon was to get a team together and create an app that solves a local problem, and the winner from the local competition got a spot in the world finals to compete for $100,000.  I loved this idea because not only did it encourage people to get out and hone their coding skills, but it gave them incentive to get out and help their community at the same time!  It’s an awesome thing that Paypal is doing with these hackathons.

More so than the details of the event as a whole, I am here to praise the team that won the best Windows App at BattleHack Miami, which was… drum roll please… “The Voluntiers” (and yes I have been assured that the name is spelled correctly).  This team consisted of

Katherine Martin – project manager, designer
Ed Toro – website development, API’s
Frank Haggar – Construct game to simulate donations, volunteering
Robert Hellestrae – Windows Phone 8 app development

Their app is for Windows Phone 8 :) , and it encourages volunteerism with integration of the PayPal Checkout SDK.  How awesome is that?!
