Client Requirements for TS Web Access in Windows Server 2008 Release Candidate (RC0)

Starting with the RC0 release of Windows Server 2008, Terminal Services Web Access (TS Web Access) requires the most recent update to the Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client software. This updated version is available in the beta versions of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).

If you are taking part in a Microsoft Connect Beta program, you can download the beta versions of Windows Vista SP1 or Windows XP SP3 from the program Web page.

If you are not an administrator, and you are using TS Web Access at your workplace, contact your system administrator to determine whether your workplace is participating in a Microsoft Beta program. If it is a participant, your system administrator can help you to obtain the updated RDC client software.

Information for Administrators

When a user who has an older version of the RDC client tries to use TS Web Access, they receive an error message with a URL that points them to more information. The target URL of the link currently points to this article. You can modify the target URL by using an ASP.NET application setting. To modify the target URL, follow these steps:

Note To complete this procedure, you must be an administrator of the TS Web Access Web site.

  1. Open IIS Manager on the server that hosts the TS Web Access Web site. To do this, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. In the navigation pane of IIS Manager, expand the server name, expand Sites, expand Default Web Site, and then click TS. (By default, TS Web Access is installed to this location. If you installed TS Web Access to a different site, locate and then click the site name.)
  3. Under ASP.NET, double-click Application Settings.
  4. In the Actions pane, click Add.
  5. In the Add Application Setting dialog box, do the following:
    • a. In the Name box, type rdcInstallUrl.
    • b. In the Value box, enter the target URL for the link.

Note   To restore the link to point to the default URL, right-click the rdcInstallUrl application setting, and then click Remove.

Alternatively, you can use a text editor, such as Notepad, to directly modify the Web.config file for the TS Web Access Web site. By default, the path of the configuration file is %windir%\Web\ts\Web.config. To do this, under the <appSettings> section of the file, add an entry that is similar to the following, where URL is the target URL for the link:

<add key="rdcInstallUrl" value="http://URL" />

Additional Information

  • How about Windows CE? Any plans to get a new RDC that supports the new 2008 features?

  • Few Quick Questions:

    1.  Will SP3 require admin level access to install?

    2.  Will RDP 6.1 be offered prior to SP3?

    3.  Will SP3 install IE7 and make it the default browser?

  • Is it possible to simply extract the 6.1 mstsc.exe from Vista SP1 or XP SP3 and install it on a previous version or are there additional changes to the OS made by those service packs which mean that 6.1 will never operate on any previous revision systems?

  • If we're going down this path again, let's finanly see a true .Net (JiT) platform AND browser independant install of the web based RDP client. How about that!?

There is a Java one. You know, it's that "other" web development platform.

  • Request the ability to run the updated TSweb client software on current vista or XP sp levels.

We want to evaluate Win2k8 TS as a replacement for our current Citrix enviroment, and need to test the TS web access features,  especially published applications.

  • Where can I get specification of RDP 6.1 ?

Actually I`m Korean, and MS Korea do not provide information

    for W3K8 and RDP 6.1.

(What are differences between RDP 6.0 and 6.1 ?)

  • Hey termserv,

The other day I checked out Microsoft SharedView. What API does it use for screen sharing? Is it the Windows Desktop Sharing API? And a request to you to pls pls make the TS RemoteApp server available on Vista SP1 and XPSP3.

  • Is NLA going to be available on XP and when? Even the Mac RDP client now supports Network Level Authentication but XP's RDP 6 doesn't. Why dont you include it in XP SP3?

  • Hi guys, is any news about SP3 or Vista SP1. I tried to install remApps on Windows 2008 RC0 as well and is't only working on Windows 2008 RC0. Does anyone have RPD6.1 client?

  • While testing out TS Web to be demoed in the PHIWUG GearUp event in Cagayan de Oro City on Nov 7, 2007

  • What about other web browsers than IE? I.e. Firefox.

  • Right now, TS Web Access requires the Remote Desktop ActiveX control, which is only supported in IE.

Just making a second request to the one already posted.

We're wanting to demo '08 TS Features, primarily the Web Access.  We've got a slough of device/software (including Cisco and Citrix) that we'd like to determine if we can move to '08 to handle it all.

Why not make the 6.1 client available to the public?  If it's the only one compatible with Windows 2008 TS, what's the big security issue? Only qualified people have 2008 anyway.

  • Ok this is driving me nuts, installed RC0 setup RemoteAPP the same as in Beta 3 and I get the active X error on an XP client so I install service pack 3 and still no joy the same error still appears!!

Please please release the RDC 6.1 client as a seperate beta download!!
