Fortune: Alas, Poor Microsoft ... You Used to Be So Interesting
Here is a key quote from this article, "Microsoft's software is good enough... Longhorn might get geeks all sweaty with desire, but to the rest of us, it's still just an operating system." I don't believe that for a second, and I'm sure that I'm not alone. The bottom line is this- there is tons of value yet to be added to operating systems in general, Windows especially. I think WinFS has huge potential. Applications that catalog and correlate data in an intelligent manner on your PC are going to be very important, especially as storage continues to improve at such a tremendous pace. That feature alone could be huge, but I suspect that there are others that could be as compelling. While I don't see it as a "slam dunk", I thing that Longhorn will be very interesting, and not just to geeks. Software developers (not just MS and others big companies), will need to step up to the challenge here.
