Here's an article that I recently wrote for .NET Magazine on the development of standards for Web services. The bottom line of the article is this- if you're considering the adoption of Web services in the enterprise, you have to be aware of what is going on with respect to standards development. Beyond the implementations of the SOAP stack itself, there is a lot going on with respect to WS support for transactions, reliability, and other functions. If interoperability is a goal for your organization, you need to consider which companies are supporting which standards. While there has been a lot of success to date with WS standards (SOAP), that may change in the near future.
