Save Your Energy - Turn Off a LAMP

  • Comments 8

I recently met some people from RDA, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, and today they sent me a link to a recent win they had turning off the LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) for Independence Air (they used to fly as United Express). Check-out the video and read more about it here.

Once upon a time, I blogged about my preference for companies that use Microsoft technologies [Microsoft-Biased Consumerism]. Since Independence Air has a direct route from Seattle-Tacoma to Dulles (I’m originally from the DC area), I’ll add Independence Air to the list.

Update - Fixed video link.

  • The link to the video is broken...
  • Just for the record, this is not a "LAMP" solution: There was no PHP (they were running Weblogic, hence a J2EE solution) and I wonder if there was even any MySQL (because the article talks about a database tier running SQL Server 2000 on a quad proc dell system which did not change).

A domain answer would probably be http://www.mysql.com/it-resources/case-studies/mysql-sabre-casestudy.pdf

I haven't watched the video, only read the article, but I hope I didn't miss anything. Sorry for blowing the pun :)

    Regards.
  • Seems a bit silly to me to favor doing business with a company that uses MS technologies vs. one that doesn't. I think it's best to compare the more important attributes like price, delivery, service, quality, etc. If it happens to be that MS technologies contribute to any of the above, which is the point of such technologies, then the net decision will be the same.
  • The link in line is wrong, it should not be "http://mms//media.rdacorp.com/public/ia.wmv", but "mms://media.rdacorp.com/public/ia.wmv".

    :) have fun!

  • Wow. Having worked in IT at an airline before, I have some familiarity with the speed at which airline marketing departments need to work. I recall similar issues with an IBM-backed solution being slow to allow updates.

I found your article at an interesting time: I just finished a meeting with some Microsoft folks dicussing general technologies and upgrading my environment. With my personal and corporate experiences with Linux, Independence Air's trials felt familiar. I haven't had an experience on their scale, but I have determined that the Microsoft environment is the best fit for my employer. I'm definitely going to save that article for reference.
  • Rob - thanks for the comments!

The video link is broken though!

  • Don't forget us good folks at AlaskaAir.Com, we've been using Microsoft since the beginning. :)
  • Yes, we must not forget Alaska - in fact, I'm flying Alaska to PDC. :)
