and another thing about Web Slices

    Posted over 4 years ago

ok so I posted just a few hours ago about how easy it was to use a Web Slice in Internet Explorer 8 , well i just spotted something else very cool with how IE8 handles them

If you navigate to a page which has Web Slices on them, and again using the UK MSN homepage as a good example, the little RSS icon on the tool bar

    RSS icon on IE8 toolbar

turns to a a green web slice icon

Web Slice icon on IE8 toolbar

and if you click on it you get a list of all the Web Slices on that page

list of web slices on a page in IE8

I love learning new little things like that, which can make the entire experience that much better.

Adding a Web Slice to your Favorites bar is easy

Web Slices are something new in Internet Explorer 8, they basically let you subscribe to just a certain part or a web page (and see when it is updated) and see that information in your favourites tool bar.

You will know if a certain part of a web page is a Web Slice because when you place your mouse pointer over it a little green icon Web Slice Indicator and border will appear, like this on the UK MSN homepage

Web Slice on UK MSN Homepage

Simply click on the icon and you will get a little pop up message

add web slice to favorites bar

And then you will get an extra option on your favorites tool bar, in this case On MSN Today and if you click that you will be taken to the MSN homepage news section.

For more information on Web Slices in Internet Explorer 8 try this FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

There are many more web slices available on the Internet Explorer Add-ons web site at http://www.ieaddons.com/en/webslices/  let me know which Web Slices you use.

Not a PC Lauren would have chosen

The  Moneual, Jewel-covered PC coming in at around 15 20 grand is not a PC that Lauren (from the latest I’m A PC ad) would have chosen…

DVICE: Moneual unveils Korea's most expensive, jewel-covered personal computer

it even makes a Mac look cheap!

Not to my tastes (although it does run Vista) and rather something gaudy that a premiership footballer would own…

Accelerators don’t have to be boring

    Posted over 4 years ago

So hopefully by now you have heard of Accelerators in IE8? well if not read this article most of the time I find them incredibly useful for stuff like mapping and searching.  the kind of stuff you do everyday, but they can also add a little fun and I wanted to share an accelerator that was demo’d to me this morning.

The Entertonement accelerator lets your listen to the sound of text quotes from the Entertonement web site

As with all accelerators you can down load from the IE Addons web site

install the Listen on Entertonement accelerator for IE8

Click the image (or follow this link) to add the accelerator to Internet Explorer.

It is then very simple to use just highlight a piece of text (I chose Monty Python and the Holy Grail) on a web page and then click the blue box, All accelerators and then listen with Entertonement

    using Entertonement accelerator

You will then get an accelerator fly out and if there is a matching sound bite in there database you will hear that…

    image

Hope you enjoy, if you find any good soundbites or other fun accelerators please let mw know.

If you want to find out more about accelerators in Internet Explorer 8 then try the following articles:

    1. What are search suggestions and Accelerator previews?
    2. Using Accelerators to find addresses, define words, and do other tasks with selected text
    3. Using the Internet Explorer 8 Add-on Manager

Twitter to be taught in UK Schools?

    Posted over 4 years ago

    TechCrunch

TechCrunch in the UK is reporting that the British Government is proposing that Twitter is to be taught in primary schools.

‘The British government is proposing that Twitter is to be taught in primary (elementary) schools as part of a wider push to make online communication and social media a permanent part of the UK’s education system. And that’s not all. Kids will be taught blogging, podcasting and how to use Wikipedia alongside Maths, English and Science.

The draft plans were due to be published next month, but have leaked early to The Guardian. Children will also learn “fluency” in handwriting and keyboard skills, and how to use a spellchecker. Luckily they will still be taught how to spell themselves, rather than rely on Mr Clippy’

Well certainly different to my primary school time when we more focused on learning to read, write and add up!!

Turbo charge your Browser with IE8

    Posted over 4 years ago

My colleague @winlivematt has put up a great article on using Internet Explorer 8 over on the Windows Live channel on MSN UK

    TurboCharge your browser IE8

‘Internet Explorer is being touted as being faster than ever before. What do we mean by faster?

IE8 reduces the amount of time that it takes to look up an address, locate a site you have visited a few hours or a few days ago and compare products.

With so many add-ons purring contentedly underneath its hood, IE8 puts cool functionality at tantalising touching distance. You won't even notice you're carrying out the most common of tasks’

It is a really good read and well worth a look as Mat also talks about the improved search and redesigned tabs.
