Bing takes over 10% of UK search traffic

    Posted over 4 years ago

Well it did for a couple of days before falling back according to the latest hitwise data

    Bing UK Stats

“Traffic peaked on June 3, when Bing was the eighth most visited website in the UK (ahead of all BBC properties, but one behind MSN UK) and the third ranked search engine, accounting for 10.8% of the UK market. Since the initial launch hype, traffic to the site has declined. However, one positive sign is that average visit time has increased to eight and a half minutes. This is half of Google UK’s number but only slightly below Yahoo! UK Search, implying that the people are actually spending time on the site and using it rather than just visiting out of curiosity.”

Popular Social Networks Around the World

I spotted this as an update to an earlier post  Favourite Social Network By Country is this updated Visualisation from ex Microsoftie Vincenzo Cosenza

    Social Networks aorund the world

    http://www.vincos.it/world-map-of-social-networks/

The green is the global domination of Facebook, and although Twitter is not the single biggest player in any market I wonder where it will be the first, currently 3rd according to the stats in the USA.

Some of the patterns that Vincenzo calls out:

    - Facebook has almost colonized Europe and it’s extending its domination with more than 200 millions users
    - QQ, leader in China, is the largest social network of the world (300 millions active accounts)
    - MySpace lost its leadership everywhere (except in Guam)
    - V Kontakte is the most popular in Russian territories
    - Orkut is strong in India and Brazil
    - Hi5 is still leading in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and other scattered countries such as Portugal, Mongolia, Romania
    - Odnoklassniki is strong in some former territories of the Soviet Union
    - Maktoob is the most important Arab community/portal

and what this shows to me is the diverse and different SN sites in specific countries that cater for local markets and users.

The visualisation was done by what looks a very cool site from IBM that I had not heard of called ManyEyes which looks a very smart place to share and discover data

I am sure you have heard about bing, the new search from Microsoft.

But one thing that looks great is the Bing Community site which is a central place for all things bing, with blogs, forums and more.

Hats tip to Betsy for the tip and for reminding me that the bing twitter account is @bing

The daddy of conventional mice - Microsoft Explorer Wireless Mouse comes out top in Register Review

    Microsoft Explorer Wireless mouse

Just read the Registers reviews of 12 mice 12 of the best... mice • Register Hardware and the Microsoft Explorer Wireless Mouse which it touts as “The daddy of conventional mice…” gets the highest rating 95% of all 12 mice they reviewed

“The daddy of conventional mice that comes with something called BlueTrack that enables it function on just about any surface irrespective of texture, colour or albedo. Whatever the science behind BlueTrack's blue laser, it works. We tried in on a shiny white desktop that usually puts the kibosh on any laser mouse and it performed faultlessly. Power comes from a rechargeable AA battery, which can be replaced by a normal cell if circumstances dictate and you get two programmable function buttons. Though of no practical use, the base glows a lovely blue when you turn it on. In fact, we rather wish we could have had the blue glow on all the time, reduced battery life not withstanding. The scroll wheel could do with standing a little more proud of the device in order to make moving left and right across documents easier and the USB dongle doesn't lie flush when clipped into the underside of the mouse for storage – and that's the only way of turning the mouse off – but, ultimately, these are peripheral grumblings. Microsoft also supplies a mains charger, so you can top up the battery without having to turn your computer on”

Even with the blue glow I don’t think I will be switching from my Arc mouse just yet.  Whenever you get it out on a train or in a coffee shop it is amazing how many people ask what it is (especially when folded up, and can’t believe it is a mouse.  Now if they did a Bluetrack version which glowed on start up I could be tempted.

You can find more information on the Microsoft Explorer Mouse and how to buy it.
