Windows Live Family Safety web filter help

    Posted over 3 years ago
    by Rob Margel

Want to know more about the Windows Live Family Safety web filter?  Then try these latest Windows Help topics:

How does the Family Safety web filter work?

“Web filtering in Windows Live Family Safety can help protect your child by restricting access to certain websites based on settings you choose. The web filter has two parts that work together:

    • The Web filtering page on the Family Safety website. When you save your choices here, Family Safety remembers the settings for the next time your child signs in. You can use the website to answer requests or make changes even if you’re using a different computer than your child uses.

    • The Family Safety software that you set up on your household’s computers. The changes you make to the Web filter settings will only work on Windows accounts that have been matched using the Family Safety software (also called the filter). If you set up the software but never visit the Web filtering page on the Family Safety website, your child will remain on the default setting.

The web filter watches all Internet activity coming to your computer. It keeps a record of that activity and checks to make sure each website is allowed before showing it to your child. It also handles permission requests from your child to view blocked websites. A website might be blocked because:

    • You added it to your child’s Block list on the Web filtering lists page.

    • The website belongs to a category of websites you don’t allow.”

The article also covers more information on:

    • The different types of categories (Child-friendly, social networking, web mail and adult content)
    • How it decides whether a site belongs to one of those categories
    • How search services are categorised
    • How other pages from search services categorised
    • How are the pages that list search results categorised
    • And how does it handle HTTPS websites.

There is also a new FAQ : Family Safety web filtering: frequently asked questions that covers:

    • What is Windows Live Family Safety web filtering?
    • What web filtering settings are available, and how can I decide which one is right for my child?
    • Can I preview a list of websites the filter will block or allow?
    • What do I do if I’m getting too many requests from my child to visit websites?
    • My browser has a mode in which history is not stored. Can my child use this to circumvent Family Safety?
    • Why are the results incorrect when I test my child’s web filter settings?
