Urdu/Hindi/Hindustani is one language..
Before 1947 India and Pakistan was one single country called as "Hindustan" or "United India"...and Urdu/Hindustani was the main/national language of that country..it was formed with combination of Turkish, Farsi and Arabic..Urdu is a Turkic word which means "Army encampment"..Later the Hindus changed the script of the Urdu language with "Gormukhi script" and changed of many Arabic/Farsi words with Sanskrit language and called this changed Urdu language as "Hindi"..Later Urdu was called as language of Muslims of Hindustan and Hindi was called as language of Hindu..This division of Urdu (and Hindi) language on religious basis was one of the main reasons of division of India into two states i.e. Pakistan (where Muslims were in majority) and India (Hindu majority) (see Hindi-Urdu Controversy of 1867)
After 1947, Urdu become the National Language of Pakistan and In India, Urdu is spoken in places where there are large Muslim minorities or cities which were bases for Muslim Empires in the past.
since 1947 then Pakistan produced many classic and great poets, writers, scholars in Urdu language...and now many Microsoft Products including Windows 7, Vista and XP have been localised into Urdu language by team of professional Pakistani Urdu translators...
Mr Hassan is absolutely right. He described the reality in a very good way. It's true that there is a large difference between Urdu and Hindi. As the name Hindi suggest, it is spoken by Hindus and it's their identification, and Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and it is a combination of many languages. The word "Urdu" means "The language of the soldier", means it is a mixture of different languages which were spoken by soldiers of all over the Sub-continent. Later is was named "Urdu". A big clash between Hindus and Muslims had been occurred in 1967, commonly known as "Hindi-Urdu Controversy".
So don't ever again mix up Urdu with any other language. Urdu has its unique identification. We don not have to convince people about it, because normal people know that Urdu is a national language of our beloved Pakistan.

اردو ہے جس کا نام ہمی جانتے ہیں داغ
سارے جہاں میں دھوم ہماری زباں کی ہے
Translation:
The language, which is grandiosely known in all over the world.
It is Urdu, and it is our language.
I just contributed a little bit of my duty to serve my mother language.
Still if anybody confuses Urdu with any other language, then it's s/he must be ignorant.
