Why don’t some websites and pages work correctly in IE9?

    Posted over 2 years ago
    by Rob Margel

Why don't some website features work in Internet Explorer 9?

“Some website features might not work correctly if you're using the Beta version of Windows Internet Explorer 9 or old versions of add-ons. For example, links to videos and games might not work or a webpage might not open at all.

If a website isn't working correctly, try one or both of the following:

    • If you're using Internet Explorer 9 Beta, download the most recent version of the browser from the Internet Explorer 9 download page. For more information about the version of Internet Explorer that you're using, see Find out which version of Internet Explorer you're using.

    • Download the most recent versions of your installed add-ons. For example, if you're trying to watch a video or play an online game, you might need to update Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flash, or Java. You might need to go to an add-on manufacturer's website to download an update. For more information about add-ons, see How to manage add-ons in Internet Explorer 9.

Why do some webpages look incorrect in Internet Explorer 9?

“Some websites might not display correctly in Windows Internet Explorer 9. For example, portions of a webpage might be missing, information in a table might be in the wrong locations, or colors and text might be incorrect. Some webpages might not display at all.”

If so you can try looking at

    1. Turning on compatibility mode
    2. Turn off Tracking Protection for a single website
    3. Turn off Hardware Acceleration

Quick tip - IE9 turning the search in address bar back on

    Posted over 2 years ago
    by Rob Margel

This post is inspired by a comment in an old blog post about IE9 beta where a poster had said that in IE8 they had disabled the search from address bar feature and after installing IE9 they couldn’t work out how to turn it back on.  So this is an easy simple way to do that within IE9.

    1. open internet options open IE9 internet options
    2. in the general tab choose the Settings button in the Search  section. choose searchsetting sin IE9
3 . Select Search Providers ( i think this is by default) and then choose the option near the bottom  Search in the address bar  to toggle this feature on and off. search in the address bar in IE9 toggle on and off

    So hopefully that helps.

Quick Tip - Pin open your favorites list in IE9

    Posted over 2 years ago
    by Rob Margel

Like the previous post this is a quick posting based on a question posed in a comment on a previous blog posting.  Which was basically a complaint about not being able to pin open the favorites list in IE9 compared to previous versions of Internet Explorer. Well there is a super quick way to achieve this

    1. open up the favourites section by pressing the star in the top right corner and then press the Pin the Favorites Center button.  This should then pin them to the left hand side of your screen.

    pinned favorites list in IE9

Update 13/04/2011 - in response to Allen in the feedback to permanently have the favorites section open when you start IE9 try

Ctrl + Shift + I  (I being I for Indigo and not L for Lima)

Hopefully when you close IE9 and reopen it the favorites section should be there.
