One of the most useful features of IE9 is the download manager.

“Download Manager lists the files you've downloaded from the Internet, shows where they're stored on the computer, and makes it easy to pause downloads, open files, and take other actions.”

    Picture of Download Manager

The article Using Download Manager in Windows Internet Explorer 9 explains how to

    • Open the download manager
    • How you can use it to track of what you have downloaded
    • Choose where downloads are stored on your PC
    • Remove files form download manager

Also if you right click on a file in the download manager you can do other things such as.

    • Delete the file
    • Copy the download link so you can send to someone else
    • Go to the downloads webpage
    • Open the folder of where it is stored on your PC
    • Report that the file is unsafe
    • Rerun security checks on it including SmartScreen filter

You can help prevent other people from accessing your browsing information by using two privacy features in Windows Internet Explorer: Tracking Protection and InPrivate Browsing.  Read more about how they work at Protect your privacy using Internet Explorer 9

Tracking Protection- helps prevent websites from gathering information about your web browsing.

InPrivate Browsing – enables you to surf the web without leaving a trail in Internet Explorer. This helps prevent anyone else who might be using your computer from seeing what sites you visited and what you looked at on the web. You can start InPrivate Browsing from the New Tab page or the Safety button.

SmartScreen Filter is a feature in Internet Explorer which lets you browse with more confidence as it helps protect you against social engineering attacks such as phishing and malware. (watch a video about this feature).

We have a pretty good FAQ about it that covers the following topics

    1. What is SmartScreen Filter and how can it help protect me?
    2. What does it mean when I see a message that says a file isn't "commonly downloaded"?
    3. How do I check a website manually with SmartScreen Filter?
    4. One of the sites I visit is being flagged by SmartScreen Filter, but it's not an unsafe website. What can I do?
    5. How do I report a phishing website?
    6. How do I turn SmartScreen Filter off or on?
