This Blog provides information about running SAP Applications on the Microsoft Platform. The Blog is written by people who are working with SAP on the Microsoft Platform for decades.
How to Greatly Speed Up Migrations from Oracle/DB2 to SQL Server
Microsoft has developed some techniques to greatly speed up the process of converting from UNIX/Oracle/DB2 and AS/400 & Mainframe to Windows/SQL Server.
1. Why do customers Migrate to Windows/SQL Server?
The majority of customers who migrate legacy UNIX/Oracle/DB2 systems to Windows/Intel/SQL Server do so for cost reasons. Typically customers reduce their SAP platform costs to at least one quarter the cost of a UNIX platform (a saving three quarters).
Typically very large customers save even more when the costs of DR centers and other costs are factored in. Another benefit is a huge improvement in performance. Modern Intel systems deliver extremely good performance at a very low cost.
In recent years Intel based systems have incorporated the RAS features once only found on high cost proprietary UNIX hardware.
2. Are there Case Studies of Customers Saving money by migrating to SQL Server?
Yes, there are a large number of public case studies. In addition there are an even larger number of customers that have migrated to SQL Server. Microsoft cannot make a case study for every migration.
Unilever North America
Queensland Railways Australia
Lockheed Martin USA
There are many SAP partners who perform OS/DB Migrations including HP & RealTech
3. How to Migrate from UNIX/Oracle/DB2 to SQL Server?
SAP provide tools free of charge to all SAP customers to unload all the data and configuration from a SAP system and reload this into SQL Server. The tools are R3LOAD and JLOAD (for Java).
The attached document describes Microsoft recommendations for migrations to SQL Server. Detailed information can be found in this document.
If you have any questions please post them in this blog.
Please let me know or provide some document for how to work with R3LOAD as mentioned in Ques:3
We have migrated our SAP production from AS400/db2 to Win2008R2/sql2012 but we have seen difference on the performance when running the a report. ECC is not running on VMware. We already put more resources like CPUs and RAM but the runtime is the same. nothing is improved. In previous prod the runtime of the report is only 8 secs but in sql it's 40 secs. a big difference. This sap in sql is allocated a dedicated resource. Why iSeries performs better than Win/sql?
Sorry, i meant .. ECC is now running on VMware. <see above post>
A large number of customers have moved from AS400 to Win/SQL in recent years and all of them have seen dramatic performance improvements.
I suspect there may be a missing index or some other issue.
Can you send me an OSS message under component BC-DB-MSS and as primary support to assign this to Cameron from Microsoft.
