Disk Space Configuration for Site System Servers

Disk allocation and configuration is an important contributor to the performance of Configuration Manager 2012. Due to changes in the product feature set and underlying architecture, disk space requirements are considerably higher than previous product releases. The following guidelines can be used to determine the amount of disk space needed for Configuration Manager 2012:

* These minimum allocations do not account for additional space needed for content source on site servers. You will need to plan for this according to your organization’s needs.

 

For optimal performance, it is recommended that each line item in the above table be allocated its own dedicated RAID volume. For all data volumes (ConfigMgr and database files), best performance can be achieved using RAID 10.

For best performance, it is recommended that you pre-create your databases before installing your sites. This allows you to place the database files on the desired disk volumes and allows you to configure additional options that are not available through Configuration Manager:

 Important:

* Initial Size and Max Size must be configured in MB and are represented in the table by percentage of disk space that was allocated for that volume. For example, for a 50K site, the site database .mdf file would be configured with an initial size of 150,000MB and 1% autogrowth with a maximum file size of 270,000MB.

 

 

In addition to configuring the database file location, size, and growth parameters as described above, you should also configure the maximum server memory to be used by SQL Server. In the default configuration, SQL Server will consume 100% of system memory in buffer I/O pages. We recommend that you change this default setting as follows:

·         SQL Server Co-located on Site Server – 50-80% of system memory

·         Remote SQL Server -80-90% of system memory
