Hotmail: Three new security improvements

The Hotmail team has been busy. Three of our favorite new security improvements are:

No more easy passwords. You might know that millions of people use the word “password” as their password. But did you know that millions of people also use “ilovecats” and “gogiants”? Hackers know this. And so do engineers at Hotmail. That’s why, very soon, you will no longer be able to use these weak passwords and others like it. If you already have a weak password, Hotmail might ask you to change it in the future. Find out how to create a strong password.

Help your hacked friends. The first people to know that your Hotmail account has been compromised are often the people in your contact list who get spam from you. Hotmail has a new feature that lets you report someone else’s account has been hacked. You can even report people who use other email providers and Hotmail will send that information to the appropriate people.

For more information, see Help! My friend’s account has been hacked.

Better encryption. If you use the Outlook Hotmail Connector to manage your Hotmail account in Outlook, your email, contacts and calendar are now more secure. The newest version of the Outlook Hotmail Connector adds support of the HTTPS protocol for all communication between Outlook and Hotmail.

You can manually install the newest version of the Outlook Hotmail Connector 32-bit and 64-bit versions for Outlook 2003, 2007 and 2010 on Windows.

Note: If you don’t know whether your computer is running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows, see 32-bit and 64-bit Windows: frequently asked questions.

Hotmail has also expanded our SSL protection for other Windows Live services too. For more information, see An update on SSL support.

  • What new security improvements?!!

My email address is sending out spam mail that I cant even track. It's using my email address and my contacts as well. That is no evidence of any improvement!

  • Hotmail deleted all of my email and my wifes email and folders for no reason. Still can't get emails either and they said they can't retrieve them.

  • Suggestion. In order to protect sensitive data, and verify sender, there should be a way to send email securely and a 'stamp' verifying sender and that the documents are digitally signed.

  • Thank you for the info.I was recently scammed I got a message saying that I had virus's on my computer but I got in touch with you and downloaded the fix it worked well and now I am more vigilant.Thank you

I use your Free anti virus it is good.

  • If Nick is correct then he needs to change his Hotmail account password. This should stop his account from being used by someone (or something) else. Hotmail passwords can be stolen in a number of ways that have nothing to do with Hotmail itself and which therefore Hotmail can't defend against.

  • These are the messages I continue to receive when attempting to mark these as Phishing Scams; only 31 today thus far....

There was a problem with the Windows Live Hotmail service (a temporary network connectivity issue that has nothing to do with your computer). Please try again.

We can't connect to Windows Live Hotmail right now. Please make sure that you're connected to the Internet and try again

another one stating something about reporting to Microsoft

  • That's fine - BUT -  a lot of sites seem to be set up to prevent use of "Special Characters" and some require the first character to be a letter or prevent use of full caps!

  • The future looks a bit safer.  I've experienced spamming and hacking.  Not fun.  Thank you.

  • My email address has been sending out spam as well. I've contacted  microsoft and the results  nada.. They say contact hotmail  ... hotmail says contact microsoft. I've changed passwords ,, it's still there. Sorta a pain in the proverbial butt.

  • I had the same problem, but to fix it, just go in and change your password and that will stop your email address from being hacked and your contacts being spammed.

  • Why do I need hotmail and outlook express only I only use hotmail so do I need both and why

  • i have been blocked and can not get email back to unblock me why

  • Switching between our email accounts is now much more difficult.

    I am not impressed.

  • I have been working for at least six hours to report to you that my email accout has been hyjacked.    Nothing has worked. I even brought my notebook to my computer repair shop. He also said Nothing i can do. I tried a 866 number  no help. I nthe meantime my contacts are being told that my life is in danger in various parts of the world and would they send $3000 or more to help me. You are of no help at all and i am at a loss for what to do.  THANKS FOR NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • I knew you would not post my complaint
