Support for Windows XP ends in two months on April 8, 2014

  • Comments 42

On April 8, 2014, Microsoft will end support for its decade-old Windows XP operating system. This means that after April 8 there will be no new security updates available through automatic updating for computers that are still running Windows XP.

For more information, see Support is ending soon.

Without critical security updates, your PC may become vulnerable to harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software that can steal or damage your business data and other personal information.

  • I really liked windows 95 and was very pleased when windows 98 came around... ME and 2000  but not as bad as XP....however after about four years  XP became a good reliable system which I am using on two machines...I have windows 7 one machine and I just bought a new laptop with windows *.....I can not tell you how sorry windows 8 is...it is the saddest excuse for an operating system I have ever seen. I am no expert , just a long time computer user. I thought vista was bad so i spent money and bought 7 installed it and thought I was going to die...but as bad as it was it  was sunshine compared to the dark nightmare of windows 8.... I see no reason why XP has to be orphaned when it could be updated and run forever. Instead we are forced to give up something that works for a failure...I can only assume That the new people at windows do not know how to write a good system and the only way to get anyone to use their  is to take away the good systems. I do not use Internet explorer for the same reason..they took a browser that worked and screwed it up so bad Jesus could not use it.  I will be be an ex windows user soon. I will continue to use xp for office work and at home with my ham radios but I will not go on-line with windows 7 or 8 since I am having them removed from my machines and replaced. I may have to learn a new language but linux does not change every couple of years.  ....I like XP ...it took time work out the bugs with it and now it is good..so being good it must go....

  • 1. which is better for home use, not office use, WINDOWS7 OR WINDOWS8?

    2. is WINDOWS7 & WINDOWS8 offered as a download from the internet &/or as a disk?

    3. after loading WINDOWS7 or WINDOWS8, can i totally erase WINDOWS XP & all its supporting updates in order to free up disc. space?

    4. do i need to save WINDOWS XP for any future reason?

  • Shame on you Microsoft. Do you not understand how the many can't afford to update to new operating systems or computers? yall should still be patching and updating 3.11 workgroups. The world is filled with poor people here in America and abroad with people that could afford one used computer with Microsoft operating systems. Microsoft has made plenty of money and will continue to do so, even with supporting your old systems.

  • Once again held to ransom by the YANKS!! It will not work - I have moved to linux!!

The sooner we can migrate away from MICROSOFT the better

I hope your cars supplier stops servicing your car and supplying parts and forces you to buy a new one

  • A great OS thrown on the trash heap thanx M$, you bandit$!

  • I love XP. I found that 8.1 just makes desktops into giant smart phones, with the accompanying loss of privacy..

  • TOO DARN BAD!!!!  GREATEST MS SOFTWARE DEVELOPED.  I HAVE SEVERAL COMPUTERS THAT HAVE 1. XP  2. VISTA  3. WINDOWS 7 AND WINDOWS 8.1.  I LIKE THE SIMPLICITY OF XP.  I RUN 8.1 ON MY NEW DELL VENUE 8 PRO TABLET AND FIND IT VERY USEFUL.  HAVE PURCHASED A NEW LAPTOP THAT I WILL OPEN UP AND USE IN MARCH WITH 8.1.   BUT VERY SAD THAT MY DELL INSPIRION 17" LAPTOP OF SOME 8 YEARS AGO WITH XP THAT I PAID MAYBE $1500 FOR WILL BE DEEMED TO BE MOTHBALLED.  AND IT WORKS JUST FINE.  I AWAIT WHEN WINDOWS 9 OR 10 OR ? COMES OUT WITH BOTH A WINDOWS AND ANDROID SYSTEM ON THE SAME COMPUTER.  8.1 IS CLOSE BUT NOT QUITE THERE YET.  NOT MANY APPS FOR 8.1  MY INPUT.  THANKS FOR LETTING MY COMMENT FOR A VERY SAD ENDING FOR XP.

  • I don't think that my older computer can run Windows 7.

  • Unfortunately due to Microsofts INABILITY to actually create a better stable business operating system many, many business's have chosen wisely to stay with XP as a known quantity when in their opinion the direction Microsoft has chosen for its operating systems has continually let them down.

Windows 8 is a perfect example of a huge dud for those in business. It may be fine for consumers and yuppies.

THEY ARE NOT THE MAJOR PURCHASERS OF SOFTWARE, BUSINESS & GOVERNMENTS ARE.

Its just that XP has been the most trusted operating system business has seen.

By killing XP what choice do these business's now have when Microsoft stop support? Windows 8.1, NOT LIKELY!

  • Looks like excellent time to switch to APPLE. I can't believe MS would abandon this many users. Do you knotheads realize there are many many users that can't afford new computers. They are struggling to find food to eat and a place to sleep that is out of the rain and snow.

  • Thanks for dragging Us out into deep water, then leaving Us to drown.

  • im April,, do we have to buy an new computer ???  we use this only for  emails and searching the web  free cell,, word perfect,,,  we ae novices here,,,

  • When you stop support of XP, I'm switching to Apple. I'm in the process already. We have 4 computers. I've always used MS. I'm not taking the time to totally relearn another MSFT system. Thank you.

  • This operating system is likely the best that microsoft ever produced and is still used by hundreds of thousands individuals and businesses. It is irresponsible of microsoft to stop providing security updates as the great majority will not go to another windows but likely jump ship to apple as they don't get rid of their operating ystems and simply keep updating them

  • Any chance of SP4 release to cover all updates for XP?
