Support for Windows XP ends in one month on April 8, 2014

  • Comments 23

On April 8, 2014, Microsoft will end support for the Windows XP operating system.

As a result, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on this date. (If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive antimalware signature updates for a limited time, but this does not mean that your PC will be secure because Microsoft will no longer provide security updates to help protect it.)

To stay protected after support ends, you have two options:

Upgrade your current PC

Very few older computers will be able to run Windows 8.1, which is the latest version of Windows. We recommend that you download and run the Windows Upgrade Assistant to check whether your PC meets the system requirements for Windows 8.1, and then follow the steps in the tutorial to upgrade if your PC is compatible. For more detailed information, read the FAQ.

Get a new PC

If your current PC can't run Windows 8.1, it might be time to consider shopping for a new one. Be sure to explore the great selection of new PCs. They're more powerful, lightweight, and stylish than ever before—and with an average price that's considerably less expensive than the average PC was 10 years ago.

  • "—and with an average price that's considerably less expensive than the average PC was 10 years ago."  Your quote is pertinent, if someone paid a horrifying amount for a desktop for personal use, the cessation of microsoft support for Windows XP models is a betrayal of their client base.  Is it beyond the wit of microsoft engineers to incorporate Windows XP clients in updates????  I think not, it's just a way to get loyal clients to pay more money and buy new equipment.  Thanks for your help Microsoft! (sic)

  • Pretty sad that they are cutting the support for XP its ridiculous.Wake up Microsoft not everyone can afford a new computer..

  • My desktop is running (for lack of a better term ) on XP  , it tells me i have no space and the more i delete , the less space there is ! I can't update anti-virus software or download a scan tool , it says the certificate is invalid or destination folder doesn't exist. running out of time to fix this ! I cannot upgrade to 8.1 .I am convinced there is a bug controlling everything.

  • I rec'd excessive calls from MS tech in the previous days and they finally got me online yesterday...all the way to the THIRD "VERIFICATIN" and pay up time....Being a salesperson it hit me it was a total setup. Everyone was nice, sold the product well but the process that is place people feels slimy and so there for I rescinded my payment and hung up. The screens they used with their remote power I gave them, after verifying their identity, looked like a menu sales program the auto business uses. The only realistic screen that did not look constructed  for sales and stupid old people was the green internal screen running the checks....weak tag team in the end. Whenever did tech support call you????With three verifiers and money collectors waiting  to be passed on ...next. And there was big celebrations going on in a massive call room....so obvious...almost got me...I'll do it on my own. you don't get this MS for the simple fact that it was passive aggressive and sneaky. The fear factor is a cheap shot! I'm getting a MAC today..."bink..bye bye." It's like that.

  • Already started a Mac migration. Think they're going to change from 8.1 in a year.

  • I have tried several times to get some help. I am not tech savey. Being 78 years old I didn't think I needed to be. All I want is to get my MSN home page and be able to use my e-mail, neither of which I can now use. I can't get messages on my computer because I don't have any access to my e-mail. I tried to use the "get a code" and when enter I don't have the phone number I want to have my code sent to me I click the line "I don't have these anymore (because we have moved) I get a this program is not workin now try back later! I need to talk to someone. HELP!!!!!!!!!

  • just bought this at a bar last night for my kid what a waste of time and money

  • Wow I wish you, Microsolf  would not say good by to supporting are XP. I for one can't go out and by a new computer. This XP of mine might be old but it works great. To bad Microsoft can't stand behind there customer's and support them. Just tell me what am I to do now????

  • I thinkmi dont have to upgrade anymore .... but where disposing everything that you can hack  . Just go and LEAVE COMPLETELY .... maybe I still have a very very little respect left for you thats whyni cant say it when we are chatting. But im saying this now mr? PLEASE JUST GO THE FARTHEST YOU CAN COZ I DISCONNECTING EVERYTHING THAT CONNECTS US. MAYBE EVEN CELL NUMBERS. GOODBYE I WISH YOU GOODLUCK, AND MAY GOD FORGIVE YOU FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE TO KE.

  • If the previous working systems, Windows 7, Vista, had a good reputation, many XP users would have up-graded by now. They do not; there is no alternative but Windows 8, which will not work on many of our older computers. Microsoft claims to have a positive corporate conscience, how is it being reflected by no longer supporting XP? Many of the users are older individuals or those with limited incomes who are left with little or no alternative and are being forced into buying a new computer or being threatened by having their personal information compromised. Does Microsoft care about it's customer base...I guess not! Scammers are working overtime-presenting themselves as being from Microsoft Windows- with solutions for XP system users. By closing the door on support for XP, the company has opened the door for shady and illegal individuals to feed on the need for help and /or a solution. Shame on Microsoft! How much would it really hurt your bottom line to keep supporting XP or come up with a workable alternative that is free or low cost? You spend millions in advertising; it is cancelled out by actions like this!
