The set of personal devices one needs to have gets more interesting as Apple enveiled its new iPad. It is definitely a good competitor for Amazon's Kindle as it adds the ability to do pretty much everything that your iPhone does. The one downside I've noticed is its $499 price tag compared to Kindle's $259 (6" display). I wonder how many people would want the same features that iPhone has on a bigger screen - especially given 3GS costs $199 with a 3 year contract. I understand that bigger screens are usually good but I'm not going to be carrying the iPad around to look at my contacts or listen to music on the fly. I can totally understand that the e-books are becoming a new phenomenon and for that I can see why Kindle would be a great addition to my personal arsenal. I also think that Amazon's cap on the price of the books definitely makes it a good decision to stick to them.

I also invite folks to read Scott's post on 5 reasons why the iPad is not a Kindle killer.

The other question that comes to my mind is if I really wanted to spend $499 why wouldn't I just do it on a Netbook. That would give me all the power of Windows 7 along with all the features that iPad is providing.

There is also news that iPad will support the Apps that developers have developed for iPhone - I'm not sure how that would work from a device support point of view and screen resolution. Is Apple going to limit the number of apps that are going to be available with iPad or is it going to be a simple port.

In summary its for sure that it will be fun to see how the sale of iPad catches on and I'm still to be convinced that it will be the new cool device to own!
