For me the highlight of GameFest was the chance to meet some of the incredibly talented Dream-Build-Play finalists.

Conferences like this usually involve Microsoft giving out swag to the attendees, but this year we were excited to be given cool stuff instead. Here are some of the XNA team sporting their new Shuggy t-shirts:

I think David missed an opportunity here, though. He should have scattered his goodies on ledges high above the expo floor, and set things up so we had to rotate the convention center to get to them!

The best thing about Dream-Build-Play is that it answers two questions I get asked a lot:

Common Question 1: "Are you guys crazy? Managed code for games? That's never going to work!"

My new answer: "Hah! Go play these games and see for yourself."

Common Question 2: "Why didn't feature X make it into the next version of the XNA Framework?"

My new answer: "Because we've been playing games, of course! How can you possibly expect us to get any work done if you keep making stuff that is so cool and fun to play?"

  • "Hah! Go play [the Dream Build Play games] and see for yourself."

    So... uh, where do I download them?

  • Ha playing Games!, then why is your gamertag empty!, lol.

    Unless you've defected to the PC (or heaven forbid it a competitor!)

  • @Darks1de: As you might have noticed, XNA games don't appear on your gamercard. Also, because he's saying they're not getting work done because they're playing games... then that would mean that they're playing at work, which means that they're playing on the developer network and you can't see it. :-O

  • Hey Shawn, for those of us that couldn't attend this year, please tell us the names of the XNA guys in the picture -say from left to right, where you stand.

    That's (currently) up to the author of each game - we're going to publish the four winners on XBLA, but up until then it is up to them to decide if/when/how to make their bits available.

    Shuggy is downloadable from http://www.smudgedcat.com/shuggy.html: I'm not sure about the others.

    From left to right:

    Cyrus (the guy responsible for starter kits and general prettyness and planning of the website and developer education material)

    Ronnie (my boss)

    Minjie (the one to blame if the framework doesn't work on your graphics card: also, you might recognise the name from one of our minigames)

    Emily (the one to blame if the installer don't work right)

    Vern (hiding at the back: test lead, the one to ultimately blame for pretty much anything that don't work right)

    Dean (in front: all kinds of websitey and sample goodness)

    Me (behind)
