A couple weeks ago, I got to have lunch with John Porcaro.  I haven’t mentioned it till now, cause I haven’t been able to figure out why I enjoyed John’s time so much.  During my brief hospital stay last week, I finally figured it out – John is deftly wonderful at getting more out of you than even you thought possible, without making you feel “burdened”, and John is an incredible listener.

I cheat at work.  I always try to find something in a given situation I’ve got a card for.  My cards have labels like, “Telling A Story”, “Listening”, “Coaching”, and so on.  John, and a couple things that left an impression, are on the “Listening” card.  Now when I’m in the midst of a tough meeting, I can pull my “What Would John Do?” cards out, and see if listening skills could help the situation.  I have a bunch of these other cards, and I’m not quite ready to let folks know which parts of which people I’m modeling…

Thanks John…
