This morning (Sep 15 2009) at TechCrunch 50, Yusuf Mehdi showed Bing’s new Silverlight powered Visual Search experience. Visual Search is using images to help customers refine and complete common vertical search galleries such as shopping, travel, music, movies and sports faster. If you go to www.bing.com/visualsearch you’ll experience this amazing new visual search experience firsthand. Visual Search allows you to quickly scroll through the gallery content or do a one-click refinement using the quick tabs on the left, which are specifically relevant to the type of results you are browsing through.

Visual Search is a Silverlight application, as Silverlight allows fast manipulation of the large data sets that hold the information of each gallery and also a compelling visual presentation of the data. Using Silverlight, Visual Studio and Expression Studio also lets the Bing team rev designs at a much faster pace than they used to.
