Dopo aver ricevuto diverse segnalazioni in merito ho deciso che era il momento di agire per cui ci siamo anche noi!!!!

Finalmente è operativo il nostro account su Twitter @itaSharepoint per tutti coloro che hanno bisogno di suggerimenti, supporto, idee, opinioni e chi più ne ha più ne metta; una finestra di 140 caratteri per chi vive con passione il mondo che si nasconde dietro SharePoint (qualunque versione esso sia).

Office 365 - Rilasciata la nuova generazione di prodotti

Ieri è stato un grande giorno per Microsoft che ha annunciato il rilascio della nuova piattaforma Office 365 per le aziende.

Questo l'annuncio nel dettaglio:

"Microsoft Corp. ha annunciato la disponibilità a livello mondiale di un nuovo importante aggiornamento per i propri servizi di Microsoft Office 365 per le imprese.

Il servizio cloud di Office si arricchisce oggi di nuove caratteristiche e offerte su misura per rispettare le esigenze e i budget di tutte le tipologie di aziende, dalle piccole alle medie alle grandi.

Oltre ai servizi già rilasciati quali Microsoft Lync Online, Microsoft Exchange Online e Microsoft SharePoint Online Services, gli utenti possono ora ottenere le applicazioni di Office con cui hanno più familiarità, su un massimo di cinque dispositivi.

December 2012 CU - FAILED: SharePoint 2010 SharePoint Administration Service not starting

Hi,

I finished now to install latest Cumulative Update [December 2012] with an amazing Failure message :(

After one hour of troubleshooting I have discovered that also February 2012 CU had same issue (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/sharepointadminprevious/thread/850d9823-2c7c-4557-8e85-904a59f73704).

My solution has been to configure internet access to SharePoint server where is blocked and start again Configuration Wizard.

AutoSPInstaller.exe - Unattended installation senza segreti

Per tutti quelli che non lo conoscono, Codeplex.xom è veramente un pozzo senza fondo di notizie, utility, applicazioni in grado di soddisfare molte richieste per le vostre farm "custom" (ricordo che Microsoft NON supporta applicazioni custom che non siano espressamente indicate\prodotte dai propri tecnici).

In questo caso volevo segnalarvi un ottimo tool per creare delle semplici installazioni unattended di SharePoint, inclusi prerequisiti e Language Pack.

Update delle Office Web Applications ( OWA )

Le Office Web Applications sono un componente aggiuntivo che può essere installato in una Farm SharePoint 2010 e mettono a disposizione una serie di features che consentono di utilizzare direttamente il proprio browser per creare, visualizzare ed editare i file della suite Office 2010 ( Word, Excel, PowerPoint e OneNote nello specifico).

A differenza del prodotto SharePoint 2010 gli update per il prodotto OWA non sono distribuiti mediante pacchetti cumulativi ( cumulative update ) ma vanno scaricati separatamente.

Gli stessi file di update ( .msp ) si trovano anche nei pacchetti cumulativi per il prodotto SharePoint Server, pertanto per aggiornare in maniera completa il componente OWA si può seguire la sequenza:

SP1
wacproof-en-us.msp dalla Dec-11 CU
WacProof-( non-english locales).msp dalla June-11 CU ( scompattate la CU ed estraete i .msp dei linguaggi che vi interessano )
wacwfe-x-none.msp dalla June-12 CU

Per scompattare i pacchetti cumulativi ed estrarre solo i .msp di interesse:

Aprite una console CMD
Navigate nel folder dove avete salvato il pacchetto cumulativo
Eseguite: <nome-pacchetto.exe> /extract:"<path di destinazione>"
Accettate i termini di licenza

Es. c:\updates>office2010-kb2598151-fullfile-x64-glb.exe /extract:"c:\updates\dest"

SharePoint still slow to open first page - could be a problem with Microsoft CLR...

Today a customer was very upset about the slow SharePoint to show the first page. This is one of the sore points of this amazing product, and generally everything is resolved with a little warmup script that performs a sort of pre-load the web pages before having users first logon. On occasion, however, as in the case of my client, the script might not be enough : (

In my rescue came the saints Bing and Google that showed me several solutions including, of all, that on Muhimbi blog site which can be summarize as: " A new approach to solve SharePoint’s painfully slow spin-up /
start-up time for first request "

Symptoms for STSADM:

You start STSADM without any parameters
There is a delay of about 30 seconds
While you are waiting, and tearing your hair out because your deployment
script has about 60 STSADM commands, there is no CPU activity, swapping or
significant network traffic.

Symptoms for SharePoint sites:

You make the first request of the day, or the first request after recycling
the app pool because you are developing assemblies that sit in the GAC.
There is a delay of about 2 minutes
While you are waiting, and tearing your remaining hair out because you know
you have to do this at least 50 times today, there is no CPU activity, swapping
or significant network traffic.

The problem is that when loading signed assemblies the .net Framework checks the Internet based Certificate Revocation List. As our servers have, like most secure environments, no outgoing connections to the public Internet, the
connection to crl.microsoft.com times out after what appears to be 30 seconds. It probably does this a couple of times in succession, causing a 2 minute wait when spinning up SharePoint.

After the timeout the assembly is still loaded and the software works as expected, though very slow every time a new signed assembly is loaded for the first time, which happens a lot. The worst thing is that no entries are written to the event log and no exceptions are thrown so you are left completely in the dark about why your application is so bloody slow.

There are a couple of workarounds, which one works best is for you to decide:

Add crl.microsoft.com to your hosts file and point it to your local
machine. Some people have reported success with this, but it didn't work for me.
Allow your servers to directly connect to crl.microsoft.com. If your
environment dictates the use of a proxy server, configure it using proxycfg.
Disable the CRL check by modifying the registry for all user accounts that
use STSADM and all service accounts used by SharePoint. Find yourself a group
policy wizard or run the vbscript at the end of this posting to help you out.
Alternatively you can manually modify the registry for each account:

The following script applies the registry change to all users on a server. This will solve the spin-up time for the service accounts, interactive users and new users.

Se la risposta alla domanda è SI, fate attenzione in quanto il supporto per questi prodotti terminerà il 9 Ottobre 2012 (controlla insieme al TAM di riferimento sulla pagina ufficiale del lifecycle) ma, per chi estenderà il supporto, questo verrà garantito fino al 10 Ottobre 2017.

Questo significa che dopo il 9 Ottobre non verranno prodotte più hotfixes per entrambi i prodotti ad eccezione delle security fixes !

Per dettagli sulla differenza tra supporto esteso e supporto standard del prodotto vi suggerisco di consultare il sito Microsoft Support Lifecycle Policy FAQ.

SharePoint Developer Dashboard

Non molti conoscono questo utilissimo tool gratuito, integrato in SharePoint, che permette di monitorare le performance di loading delle pagine.

L'unica difficoltà è che, di fatto, questa Dashboard non esiste o meglio, è nascosta pertanto, deve essere abilitata dall' amministratore di SharePoint.

Per attivare questo tool, aprire la PowerShell console con diritti amministrativi ed eseguire il seguente comando:

$webSvc =[Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPWebService]::ContentService
$webSvc.CollectSPRequestAllocationCallStacks = 'True’
$webSvc.Update()
$webSvc.DeveloperDashboardSettings.EnableDiagnosticMode()

Una volta abilitato, il tool appare come un'icona accanto alla visualizzazione dell'account autenticato

Cliccando sull'apposita icona potete consultare tutte le statistiche legate ad ogni pagina di SharePoint, ciò che è in esecuzione e da quanto tempo, facilitando il compito di chi deve fare troubleshooting.

Un piccolo tool ma molto funzionale.

PowerPivot on the iPad: Best Practices

Mobile BI is getting hotter and hotter by the second. Microsoft hasn’t exactly been quick off the mark in this space as we have no mobile BI apps of our own and have pretty much ceded the space to partners. That’s OK I guess, because some of our partners like Extended Results have created some pretty amazing stuff.

If you’re interested in a little bit of “out of the box Mobile BI” and don’t want to buy 3rd party products, you can always view your published Excel Services & PowerPivot workbooks on the iPad.

Designing and/or re-factoring your reports for the device does take a bit of thought and planning, however. This post is a brain dump on things you should consider with some hints and tips. Most of what I’m going to give you falls into the “no duh” category, but I think you’ll pick up some useful nuggets.

Size Matters

Truth. Your biggest challenge will be building a report which relates a meaningful amount of information in the limited amount of screen real estate you’ll have to work with. You thought it was tough artfully cramming things into a PPS dashboard? Meh! Take the training wheels off!

Develop and Test Small

You may have an iPad to begin with, and even if you do it’s a pain in the rear to constantly refresh your changes on the device to see how things are looking. Develop and test as much as you can on your desktop/laptop.

Install Safari on your desktop and configure it to act like Safari-on-iPad:

Open Safari’s Options dialog.
Click Advanced on the Options dialog’s toolbar.
Select Show Develop menu in the menu bar.
if you want to go all out, click Security on the Options dialog, and de-select Enable plug-ins and Enable Java. This isn’t strictly necessary, but the items don’t work by default on some iOS Safari installations as far as I know.
Close the Options dialog. If the Menu Bar isn’t showing in Safari (File, Edit View, History, Bookmarks, etc.) Choose the Options drop down, and de-select Hide Menu Bar.
On the Options drop-down, select Hide Bookmark Bar.
On the Develop menu, choose User Agent, then Safari iOS x.xx – iPad
Hide the the Menu Bar again.
Here’s the painful part: Go 1024 x 768 on your screen resolution. I know, it’s horrible. Do it, and maximize Safari.

After Safari is on your machine and you’re running in 1024 x 768, you can begin developing,

Basic Guidance

Remember, no Silverlight. The fancy PowerPivot Gallery visualizations like Theater, Carousel, etc. don’t work on the iPad since iOS doesn’t support Silverlight and Flash. Make sure you set the default view of the gallery to “All Documents”. If you don’t want to go this route, you can create a Web Part page for each workbook and add an Excel Web Access Web Part to display the workbook.

Assume that users don’t know iPad navigation tricks. That’s right, believe it or not some of your users may be dumb. They have an iPad, but they don’t know how to use it. I know, I know – could never happen. If it does happen, they’ll get hopelessly lost trying to navigate your report, and just give up. So throw ‘em a bone with some quick movement tips.

Consider adding a new worksheet to the front of your workbook which explains the two-finger scroll gesture. Some sample text:

To navigate the reports in this workbook:

Use the worksheet tabs at the bottom of the browser to move from worksheet to worksheet

To view different parts of a worksheet, press and hold two fingers to the iPad screen, then scroll while keeping your fingers on the screen

Move slicers to the bottom of each worksheet. Horizontal slicers use up valuable screen space and will nearly always force your users to scroll. First, shrink these suckers up so they use less vertical space. Next step, move them to the bottom of the sheet unless it’s absolutely necessary you keep them at the top.

Remove logos and artwork in the report header. Artwork and/or a logo in the header of a report adds a dash of class. However, on the iPad, it makes it less likely you’ll see all the information you need on one screen without a scroll.

Expand row-level groupings in your PivotTables. I like to collapse all the grouped rows in my PivotTables to save on vertical space. While this generally is a good design decision, it doesn’t take into account a mantra that is critical for you to understand in iPad-land. Repeat after me:

The iPad soft keyboard is evil. Do everything you can to prevent it from getting in the way of your user

Each time your user has to interact with a + or – symbol to expand or collapse a grouping of rows, iPad’s keyboard will appear. This gets really old after about the first 10 seconds. Before you save the workbook to SharePoint, expand all your row groupings so users only have to scroll the workbook to view the information it contains rather than do a scroll + “tap” (on the row).

You might also want to add another “navigation note” about row groups to your “how to navigate” cheat sheet:

To expand or collapse a group of rows or columns, tap and briefly hold the + or – symbol. The web report will re-paint 2-3 seconds later

Consider replacing slicers altogether. When one interacts with a slicer in any way, the blasted soft keyboard will make an appearance. In addition, there are no iPad gestures you can use to easily select multiple slicer items like one can by CTRL and SHIFT clicking in Windows. The “old-fashioned” Report Filters aren’t as pretty or smart as Slicers, but one can select multiple items inside them and they only pop the soft keyboard once when one opens the filter dialog page. In some cases, you’re just going to need to bite the bullet and use them instead of slicers.

Other Ideas

Turn off the Excel Toolbar: The Excel toolbar becomes something of an appendix when your PowerPivot workbook is viewed on the iPad. Why not remove it and get a few extra rows in your worksheet displayed? You can do so by displaying the workbook inside an Excel Web Access web part, and then turning off the toolbar:

Modify your Master Page: Even a basic SharePoint site generally uses (wastes?) vertical space with header logos, breadcrumb trails, and alike. If you have the CSS chops, why not get into the master page and modify some of this to free up more room?

In passato, gli strumenti per l'accesso a grandi quantitativi di dati non strutturati a scopo di analisi erano in genere disponibili solo agli utenti con una lunga esperienza nel data warehousing o nel data mining, mentre la pubblicazione sul Web di dati provenienti da origini diverse era un'operazione riservata a sviluppatori e consulenti. Ora, grazie alle nuove caratteristiche di Office SharePoint Server 2010, gli Information Worker possono assemblare dati provenienti da più origini e pubblicarli sul Web.

L'utilizzo congiunto di Office SharePoint Server 2010 con Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 e\o SQL Server 2012, consente di pubblicare facilmente report, elenchi, tabelle Pivot e indicatori di prestazioni (KPI) sfruttando tutti quei servizi integrati in Sharepoint (non necessitano di essere acquistati separatamente) che rappresentano uno dei valori aggiunti di questo fantastico prodotto, .

Quando si pubblicano report con dati inclusi in uno di questi sistemi, si mettono a disposizione dati strategici o operativi, sotto forma di grafici e\o elaborati, condivisibili direttamente dall'interfaccia web di qualsiasi browser.

In SharePoint 2010 queste funzionalità vengono attivate tramite la configurazione di appositi Services Application e possono essere integrati tra loro: pertanto posso far elaborare, ad esempio, dei report di performance originati da un foglio excel collegato ad altri workbook, su cui verrà fatta un'analisi di performance visibile facilmente attraverso scorecard personalizzabili.

Non mi soffermerò ora sul dettaglio di ogni componente che, comunque, verrà approfondito man mano che andremo avanti su questo argomento, avvalendomi anche della collaborazione di Alessandro Recino, primo MCM su SQL Server e vero esperto del mondo BI, ma è imposrtante iniziare a comprendere meglio quali sono i vari componenti che, in SharePoint, possono essere utilizzati per creare BI Report.

SharePoint Designer 2010 Workflow fails to start

Data Protection Manager 2010 è il prodotto Microsoft, incluso nella suite di System Center, per la protezione contro eventuali malfunzionamenti di applicativi quali Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint, o intere architetture quali Active Directory.

Per quanto riguarda SharePoint 2007, DPM 2010, per poter funzionare correttamente, deve avere a disposizione un ambiente SharePoint aggiuntivo, oltre quello da proteggere, chiamato Recovery Farm. Si tratta di un'installazione ex-novo di SharePoint 2007 in modalità single-box (tutto in un unico server compreso SQL Server), in cui DPM appoggerà i dati da recuperare (siano essi singoli item o Site collection).

IMPORTANTE: la Recovery Farm non sarà presa in considerazione da DPM qualora sia necessario eseguire un Full-farm recovery o un Content DB recovery.

Questo ambiente deve essere in tutto e per tutto uguale allo SharePoint di produzione (eccezion fatta per il numero dei server) e deve rispettare i seguenti requisiti:

SQL Server dovrà avere la stessa versione, lo stesso nome, la stessa istanza (se esiste) e gli stessi drive di quello di produzione
Il server che ospitarà la Recovery Farm dovrà essere configurato come quello di produzione
La Recovery Farm dovrà essere allineata a quella di produzione (stesse patch, stessa build di SharePoint, stessi Language Pack, stesse custom solution, features e site definition)

La RF non dovrà essere una farm attiva e può essere configurata su un ambiente virtuale, purchè sia disponibile lo spazio disco necessario a DPM per lanciare la procedura di restore (anche se lo spazio utilizzato da SharePoint fosse irrisorio, DPM per effettuare il restore allocherà una certa quantità di spazio disco che, al termine della procedura, verrà rilasciato).

L'utilizzo di DPM 2010 for SharePoint viene caldamente suggerito da Microsoft in quanto garantisce anche il restore del Config e Admin_Content DBs altrimenti impossibili da ripristinare singolarmente (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948725/en-us) a meno che non si voglia eseguire una procedura alternativa come quella di effettuare contemporaneamente (pena la NON supportabilità da parte di Microsoft) lo snapshot delle Virtual machine ospitanti SharePoint e il backup dei DBs sopra citati.

Va sottolineato che la RF non verrà più utilizzata, in nessun caso, da DPM 2010 qualora la farm da proteggere sia SharePoint 2010. In questo caso, infatti, il restore di Site collection e singoli item avverrà "a caldo" ovvero direttamente sulla farm originaria.
