Keep your system up to date with the most recent cumulative update package for SQL Server 2005 SP4.   SQL Server 2005 SP4 Cumulative Update 1 contains fixed released in SQL Server 2005 SP3 CU 12.  For customers upgrading to Service Pack 4 from SQL Server 2005 SP3 CU12 (Build 9.00.4311) should consider applying SQL Server 2005 SP4 CU 1 to ensure fixes presented in SQL Server 2005 SP3 CU 12 are available on their systems post upgrade to Service Pack 4.

  • I unable install CU1 on SQL Express Server 2005 SP4. The update always fails. I also did from the scratch install SQL Express Server 2005 SP4 but CU1 won't install

  • Why is SQL Server 2005 SP3 CU12 not included in SP4 in the first place ?

  • I suppose the mainstream support for SP3 is ending by April 2011, if this is the case if we upgrade to SP4 we might get the mainstream support until next year. This is my assumption. Please confirm.

We wanted to retain the mainstream support for the service pack  we install until next year, should that be SP3 or SP4 ? This is because we plan to upgrade to SQL 2008 by next year only.

As we are using lot of Microsoft Products which uses SQL Server as backend (SCOM, SCCM), the dependency confirmation from Microsoft is also required for doing the upgrade. More over SP4 is in RTM, is this something that I should wait for the RC to be live in order for all my SQL Servers to be upgraded.

    Please answer.

    Thanks,

  • is SP4+CU1 the same as SP3+CU12?

We currently have SP3+CU10. what would you advice?

  • Are these files usable? When trying to extract always reports an error that the archive is part of a multi disk set, and to insert the last disk in the set... :(

  • @Desmond: CU12 for SP3 was released after they locked down the SP4 code for final testing before that service pack was released. This situation always tends to happen with service packs since the code base for SQL Server does not stay static very long.

@Wilfred: SP4 + CU1 does equal SP3 + CU12 as regard to bug fixes etc. but you get additional functionality from SP4, and eventually the CUs for SP3 will stop.

@Ganesh: SQL 2005 mainstream support ends 12th April 2011 regardless of service pack - extended support goes until 12/04/2016.

  • We're currently on SP3 CU8.  What is the recommended path for updating to the most current?

  • @help: Microsoft would probably recommend testing and installing SP4, since it receives more testing internally than other cumulative updates. If you installed SP4 you would not lose any of the fixes already present on your SP3 CU08 instance(s).

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 4 (KB2463332)

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 4 (KB2463332) could not be installed

  • This kit does not install properly, even under an administrator account and run as administrator. It gets through SQL 2005 but fails when it gets to the client components for SQL Express. Tried several times, both through Windows Update and manually applying the kit without luck. System is Vista x64.

  • Same problem as Joe, SQL 2005, on Windows XP.  Windows update continuously is trying to install this package (and downloading it OVER AND OVER) and it always fails.

  • Same problem as Joe and Megan, SQL 2005, on Windows 7.  Windows update continuously is trying to install this package (and downloading it OVER AND OVER) and it always fails. The update log SAYS it is successfull.

If so, why does it keep instaliing?
