Keep your system up to date with the most recent cumulative update package for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1. SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Cumulative Update 1 contains fixes released in SQL Server 2008 R2 CU 7 & 8. For customers upgrading to Service Pack 1 from SQL Server 2008 R2 CU7 (Build 10.50.1777.0) or CU8 (Build 10.50.1797.0) should consider applying SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 CU 1 to ensure fixes resident on the system are available post upgrade to Service Pack 1.

Hi Abhishek - Is there a SP2 for SQL Server 2008 R2 ?
"should consider applying SQL Server 2008 SP1 CU 1" <- I guess this meant to refer to SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 CU 1?
Thanks for pointing of the issue, I have gone a head and made the correction.
We just released Service Pack 1 in July 2011. Service Pack 2 for SQL Server 2008 R2 will be the next service pack.
Probably naming SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 CU1 with four version components is not very clear to understand. But it fits to build number 10.50.2769.0. So 2008=>10, R2=>50, SP1+CU1=>2500+269=2769 which is good for computer and scripting version checking. Hopefully, the next version will be called SQL Server 2011 and future version SQL Server YYYY not R2 no matter what build is it. I won't mind of a beautiful add-on to the name like Denali :) This could help to remember different versions by their code names. Thank you.
Hi, I would like to know if either SP1 or CU1 includes the security patch KB2494088. If not, will it be included in next CUs?
If SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 **CTP** has been installed, what is the recommendation now that SP1 is released, and now this CU1?
Should the SP1 CTP be uninstalled so the released version can be installed, or are the CTP and actual release the same build?
I have reviewed the release notes and readme files without finding any guidance on this.
June 2011 security patch MS11-049 is included in SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 RTM. See sqlblog.com/.../sql-server-2008-r2-service-pack-1-is-now-available.aspx
You can trust words of Aaron Bertrand, Glen Berry and his reliable source here. It seems people are very concerned about this patch and keep asking here and there. Why this information isn't published in SP1 release notes? Thanks.
The CTP of 2008 R2 SP1 is a different build to the final release of SP1 - but there is no need to uninstall, you can simply install final SP1 over CTP and it upgrades fine; then you can install the CU1.
Alternatively you can slipstream CU1 into the SP1 files and install in one go. :-)
Thanks for your answer, Hypothesis.
I already installed SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1. (Which includes CU1 to CU6).
But now i need CU9 because of support.microsoft.com/.../2543687 .
Which version of R2 SP1 CUs includes CU9.
i couldnt find any confirmation R2 SP1 CU1 or other CUs for SP1 includes R2 CU9 or i am confused.
Thanks in advance.
