Dear Customers,

The first cumulative update for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 contains fixes released in SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 CU 6 & 7.  For customers upgrading to Service Pack 2 from SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 CU6 (Build 10.50.2811.0) or CU7 (Build 10.50.2817.0) should consider applying SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 CU1 to ensure SP1 Cumulative 6 & 7 fixes present on the system post upgrade.

To assist customers in locating hotfix solutions when migrating from SQL Server 2008 SP2 servicing releases to SQL Server 2008 SP3 we have created the table below...

I am on …

SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 or
SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 CU1 to CU5

SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 CU6 to CU7

SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 CU8 or later

Version 10.50.2500 to 10.50.2810.00

Version 10.50.2811.00 to 10.50.2817.00

Version 10.50.2818.00 or later

Fixes include in …

SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2

SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 CU1

SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 CU2 or later*

 Version 10.50.4000.0

 Version 10.50.4260.0

 Version 10.50.4261.0 or later*

* Please Note:  There is no direct alignment of fixes from SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 CU8 or later into a SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 CU2 or later releases.

Sincerely,

Abhishek Sinha

  • Please update KB2630458 to reflect the release of that Cumulative Update #1 for SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2.

At first I didn´t understand "Note If you are upgrading from SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Cumulative Update 6, you must apply a post-SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 cumulative update after you upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 to obtain all the fixes. " and I searched everywhere :=)

    Thanks

  • You got a little typo in the grid for version number in the first column and second row. I guess it should be 10.50.2810.00 instead of 10.00.2810.00.

  • @Rolf - You must apply updates, because SP2 for SQL Server 2008 R2 contains only CU from 1 to 5 - without 6 and 7.

  • I'm curious. Why can't you guys just make the update process as simple as the Windows OS update process? i.e. If you release SP2 it contains all fixes for SP1 + all cumulative updates/fixes.

  • I'm not a SQL expert, and therefore am confused ... if I update to Service Pack 2, which pre-SP2 cumulative update level will I be at?

  • D, If they would wait for cu6 and cu7 to be tested good enough to be included in the sp2 the testing would have taken like one more month. In this period they would have propably released cu8 and it would be same problem again. You have to understand that Microsoft doesn't promise CUs are production safe like SPs.

  • Does the CU contain MS12-060 or do I need to apply that on top of CU1?

  • Hi guys. I notice this blog is out of date now... new CUs are being released and not reported here? Is this blog deprecated?

  • Is any one aware of an approximate date for SQL 2008 R2 SP3 realase?

  • I am doing new installation using for sccm 2012 rtm  and sql server r2 sp2 with update KB2703280, But I can still get the error of cumulative updates. Kindly let me know if there is a work around this.
