I can't remember how I came across this service but I just reconfigured my home router to use the OpenDNS server and the result is stunning. websites just load in a flash and they do cool stuff like notice my spelling mistakes (e.g. live.cmo gets automatically redirected to live.com).
Check out http://www.opendns.com/ for more or if you just want to see the difference, change your DNS to
and then to see you made the changes, go to http://welcome.opendns.com/
Day 2 of MGX was breakout session day and I went to a few okay ones but one great one – titled Enthusiast/Buzz Machine. I went because of the title of the session more than anything and was delighted to find it was being presented by Jeff Sandquist. Bizarrely I had left Jeff a voice mail about 5 minutes before this asking if we could grab coffee so it worked out perfect. Who is Jeff – he’s the man (well one of the team) behind Channel 9 and 10 who I think are just doing amazing work connecting with our customers and partners and we (the UK office) have a lot to learn from them. Jeff was a pretty cool dude and we spent some time discussing how we could learn from both C9 and 10 and perhaps contribute to the latter or host PTS-TV via the former. I’m still not totally sure how and when we’re going to get the UK effort of the ground but I bumped in to another UK director at the aiport and discussed this with him. He thinks a UK video blog would be great and I was quite taken aback when he said “the important thing is we give people latitude to say what they want to”. Nice.
Anyway, the guys at 10 just launched a new look for the site which is fantastic. Check it out along with their new manifesto.
I also attended a session with the OfficeLive team (at 7am in the morning guys!!!) and did a short PTS-TV video with Rajesh Jha, General Manager of Office Live which I’ll post soon.
In other news we announced a buyback of $20bn of MSFT shares. The biggest buyback in the history of business - shows we’re confident in the future and lets hope the investtors agree and our share price responds!
A peek inside Microsoft Research reveals Tom Cruise's technology today! (The Show On 10).
Check out PlayAnywhere from Microsoft Research. I neeeed this now!Seriously, when people say Microsoft doesn’t innovate it’s stuff like this that we need to show to them. Fantastic.
Jeff Sandquist - Microsoft Evangelist - Parodies of the Mac Ads. Just some Sunday fun – the Mac parody ads via Jeff. I have to agree with him, the 3rd one is the best and the recent posting at Channel 9 is classic – I wont post the photo here and spoil it for you!
Well this one almost snuck past me as I was on a plane back from Orlando but it seems we've confirmed that we're working on a project called Zune that is related to "a family of hardware and software products". Suitably vague but the BBC seem convinced that it means an iPOD rival. The crucial statement for me from Chris Stephenson (GM for MSN Entertainment Biz) was
"Stephenson did confirm that the initial music device will contain a hard drive and the much-discussed Wi-Fi connection for wireless Internet access."
WiFi could be the killer app on a device like this though I expect that hasn't been missed by team Jobs in Cupertino. The range of things you could do with WiFi added to a portable media device is almost endless - buying stuff automatically in store, easy sync with media centre/XBOX, simple sharing, streaming from the device....so much more.
Needless to say the story is top of Techmeme today and it's fast making it's way to the top of my Christmas list (Zune that is though being top of Techmeme would be nice too :) )
