Hugh MacLeod wants to be hired by Microsoft

  • Comments 6

That's according to Comic Strip Blog who appear to have a real issue with Hugh. Sad really as I know that Hugh doesn't want to work for Microsoft. Even if he did he probably wouldn't like it around here anyway. Perhaps what he meant is Hugh wants to work with Microsoft which is exactly what he is doing.

Maybe worth checking what Hugh has done beyond selling wine and cloathes (sic) like the Hughtrain, speaking at conferences, winning an Ad Age Marketing 50 award etc.

Seems to me that Hugh is a bit too busy to work at Microsoft even if he did want to.

  • Hilarious!

Being dissed by Comic Strip Blogger is usually a sign that you're doing something right ;-)

  • The bottom line is that MONSTER IS A WRONG CONNOTATION FOR MICROSOFT from the marketing point of view. Also the slogan is trivial and if somebody is in monopolistic position as Microsoft then changing the world is easy or much easier due to lack of competition.

As always Hugh's strategy is to denigrate common people and to suck up to anybody in position of power. I like Brits by definition and thus I have no issue with Hugh but his denigrating of common people (and monkeys like myself) is not OK.

And Hugh: stop smoking for God's sake!

Anyway thank you, Steve, for commenting about my doodles.

  • "Also the slogan is trivial and if somebody is in monopolistic position as Microsoft then changing the world is easy or much easier" To me, that's the whole point of the Blue Monster. Changing the world by being monopolistic is easy, changing the world by force is easy if you are as big as Microsoft, but making people change because they want to, because they know you are right and they want to change with you takes leadership and that is what the BM is all about. Change the world (through leadership in the industry) or go home. Now that isn't so easy.

  • personally I wouldn't have wasted fingertip skin on the CSB  post, Hugh is patently not making a beeline for Microsoft, he doesn't need to,  there are far more lucrative things for him to get up to.

I've not seen him be disrespectful of the common man,  on the contrary he seems very in touch and inclusive and frankly the kind of guy I wouldn't mind sharing a pint with (soz Hugh not a fan of new world wines )

The interesting aspect of this is what the blue monster means to different people:

To some it's bully boy bravado, an  expression of the fragile power you get by being successful in such an unprecedented way.

If I read Gary right he's saying it's about thinking about using that power benevolently.

To me it's far more personal, if you're working at or with Microsoft  you better be thinking about how you can help  change the world or you might as well go home.

There are so many points of view and this really illustrates the fact that  frankly  the slogan is not trivial, like much of Hugh's output it's bloody deep (he regularly makes me laugh out loud after more than a minute of contemplation) you just have to look at it with open mind as well as eyes.

Monster isn't marketing,  it's realising that  you may have hundreds of millions of desktops, you may have a dominant position (it's not a monopoly) but you still need to innovate, and the only real reason to innovate is to make a positive difference to real people's real lives.

  • I for one have had enough of this blue monster business. Blue monster this, blue monster that...

  • sorry to hear that Tim but I'm afriad it's not going away :)

    Steve
