New York Times - their subtitle, not mine :)
The article discusses the forthcoming Windows Live releases and they chat with Brian Hall who I'm meeting up with on Wednesday. Any questions you want me to put to him? :)
Markoff also references the 1990's Netscape era and draws comparisons. I've been drawing my own comparisons to that internally recently and I think it's more like the Internet Tidal Wave memo. Perhaps not as dramatic but make no mistake, there are some profound changes afoot. Here is how Ray Ozzie explained it during the Financial Analyst Meeting:
"this transformation from software to software plus services, is a very, very big deal for our company. It'll be a very critical aspect of all of our offerings over the next few years."
I can tell the interest level is on the up due to press calls I've had over the last week and the amount of slide decks, whitepapers and emails I have on my PC about this. Exciting times.

While cloud services may be useful for some, and for some applications, I feel that cloud service will nor replace the apps and documents on a computer. Cloud services are ideal for things such as companies with multiple units like call centres with several offices, but what happens when the internet connection goes down?
In my office, occasionally the web-based information manual doesn't work and we suck with the CD version of that information manual. Plus, many home connections, especially wi-fi networks, occasionally go down or go to slow pace from time to time. An another problem is like what happened with Google Video, what if the company goes bankrupt or closes down the service, what happens to your information.
Steve,
You ask if we have any questions for Brian Hall. Well yes, I have a few. Read here: http://jamiethomson.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!550F681DAD532637!1743.entry

couldn't agree more and it seems Google, Salesforce and others agree wiht their recent forays in to offline/rich client
Steve has a nice post: New York Times - their subtitle, not mine :) The article discusses the forthcoming...
it's interesting to see their photo at the top of the article. Microsoft is the dark storm cloud and Google is the ray of sunshine... A little naive perhaps?
