Why my next phone isn't an iPhone

Why my next phone isn't an iPhone

I'm sort of on the lookout for a new phone and have resisted the urge to buy an iPhone and unlock it though I had my second long play with it last week in Bellevue. To be honest I was more tempted to by a new Nano. Regardless, it'll be out in the UK soon with O2 apparently so even more attainable. Why will I still not get one? Here are my quick answers:

    1. Despite the price drop, it's still too expensive
    2. I think the novelty of showing to my friends would wear off after about 7 days
    3. I can't imagine holding that thing up to my ear to make phone calls
    4. It doesn't sync with my Exchange server (same reason the LG Prada I have got short shrift)
    5. Texting is tough (A study has determined that iPhone’s touchscreen is two times slower than QWERTY phones when it comes to texting)

I've seen the new Treo via Jason's site and that has potential but still the downside of size as I'm a real phone boy and like the small, portability. My bro has the new HP iPAQ 514 which though it looks very corporate I was quite impressed with. That may be the one in the absence of a clamshell replacement for my trusty QTEK 8500. Any other suggestions? I've already ruled out the HTC Touch btw...and have an S620 for email editing on the road so just looking for a small, cool phone with WM6.

side note: following some quick research I see Mr Armani is about to enter the party - sadly not with Windows Mobile

  • The man from MSFT he says no to an iphone!  Shock horror hold the front page.  Next you'll be telling us you won't have a MacBook Pro because it doesn't run Office 2007 and let me guess you are not going to have an Apple TV.

Let me guess you are going to still use Vista and not try Lepoard, you are going to use a Windows Mobile phone and you are going to stick with a Zune and Media Center.

Wow ... no blinkers here then ...

  • sigh...sorry to have to tell you Andrew but I have a MacBook Pro and 3 iPod's. That kinda blows your argument there and returns me to my points which are not Apple specific. For example, I've tried an LG Prada (which isn't Windows Mobile) and though I guess you're not a frequent reader of my blog you'd have noticed I tried an HTC Touch (which is Windows Mobile) and rejected that for poor texting too.

Sorry to have to tell you but this isn't an Apple vs MSFT post so I have to ask who's wearing the blinkers here?

Oh and my MacBook Pro runs Office 2007 very well under both Parallels and Bootcamp :)

  • I don't think you're a 514 man really steve, as you say very corporate and very bland because of it, ideal for fleet handsets but I think you will be unhappy with a form factor without the wow  factor. ( I hope that doesn't make it sound like I think you're too shallow :) )

Sounds like the Orange E650 / HTC Vox - S710  might be a fit. although a bit larger than some compact handsets  it is still a handy size and has the advantage of a keypad for the texting you crave  and QWERTY for email editing you need.

sure the E650 has  been around for a while but it's a great all rounder.

Mind you my handset of choice is my touch I can graffiti a text pretty quickly - it's not so good when subterfuge is called for but I like it,  and it runs my TomTom just fine.

  • thanks for the input Alasdair - much appreciated. Think I'm gonna sit tight for a while and see what pops out pre-Xmas

  • Check out the new HP IPAQ range; I am waiting or the 610 series. Smart Phone form factor and keypad but appears to be a PocketPC OS which would be WM6 Pro.
