Hot on the heels of the IPL, another sporting channel goes with Silverlight with the news that Setanta launched its Setanta-i service.
It gives you live and on demand channels, pay-per-view (PPV) events and a pretty large back catalogue. A pleasant surprise is there is some free content in there too – unusual for a premium broadband services that you get to pay before you play. Nice touch.
It’s available in to six regions - USA, UK, Republic of Ireland, Australia, Canada and International - though I’m not sure what international comprises but each has its own content rights as you’d expect.
I had a bit of a play today (though has to switch off when Sir Alex Ferguson came on) and great to see some of the features I saw at MIX09 such as very cool time-shifting facilities with record, live-pause and rewind.
Nice work from @poleydee and the boys and great to see them using Silverlight.
I am a Setanta Broadband subscriber and went to watch the FA Cup games and found that I need Silverlight 2.0.
Since I have one of the last generation G4 PowerBooks on a PPC chipset, I found myself cut off from the content that I have a year's subscription for.
So, I have to disagree with your statement "great to see them using Silverlight" -- for me it is not great and now I'm stuck trying to contact Setanta to get my money back or find a way to get their content on my PPC computer. Of course, in order to get to the Setanta site with the FAQs and contact info, you need Silverlight 2.0. Catch-22.
Steve-
There's a lot to like about the Silverlight version of Setanta, but have you actually looked at it? They seem to be showing a 4:3 aspect ratio feed stretched to fill a 16:9 window. It looks very amateurish.
I've been a Setanta subscriber for several years, using first the ITVN set top box, and then the Setanta Broadband service. The Silverlight image quality and functionality is vastly superior to the old broadband service, but the aspect ratio distortion really detracts from it, and I think it cheapens Silverlight's image- can't someone tell the Setanta guys nicely how to fix their problem?
since the new setanta i ifind i can record but cannot view live or on demand can you advise me i have e-mailled setanta .we hope to reply within 5 working days they told me
sorry Rod, i can't really offer setanta support here. hope they can work it out for you
