In this post, I'll talk about systems that do much more than simple test harnesses. Test harnesses provide a framework for writing and executing test cases. I've found that a *lot* of time can be spent on these systems, but they pay off in spades. Automation systems that can bring up app servers, databases, and other dependencies are difficult but often are where you find most of your bugs via automation.

I believe this so much that my company, Autoriginate (http://www.autoriginate.com), has created product called HostedQA that uses virtualization to automate these types of complex testing fixtures. Our hope is to reduce the costs in setting these up while still providing the significant value.
