Writing a game using Managed DirectX.. The Contest..

  • Comments 29

With the upcoming release of my new book, I thought it would be pretty cool if there was a contest held for writing the 'best game' using Managed DX.  Details are sketchy right now (like will people outside of the US be allowed to enter), but it's something that will be happening..

While rules and regulations are still being decided, here are some things you can start thinking about if you're interested..  The devleopment process will probably be two-three months..  Entries will be scored on numerous different 'categories' such as:

  • Originality
  • Gameplay
  • Fun-Factor
  • Use of Shaders (HLSL)
  • Use of 'DX9 Features' (i.e., PRT, HDR, etc)
  • Artisitic appeal

Naturally, the categories will be weighted.. Oh, and good prizes, etc..  I'll keep you posted on details as they become available..

  • sounds like a great idea, would be very interesting to see what people come up with.
  • New book? I look forward to it, still enjoying the old one :-)

  • I still haven't had time to read through your first book, let alone write any code! :)
  • Now, first of all:
    I want that book !!! :)
Is there a releasedate yet ?

That contest is going to be fun. Will we have to deliver the source too ? Since I do not se a catogry like codedesing/codequality or so ...

  • Well, good idea BUT:

I want to write in VB .NET, so with DX 9.0c, I can't use DX Managed.

You see what I mean ?
  • Why can't you use VB.NET with DX9.0c?
  • Is there a link to the content details? Or is that coming?
  • No link yet.. That will be coming as they become available.
  • I can write DX 9.0c applications with VB, but what I mean is that all examples in SDK are in C#, with unsafe code not like previous SDK.
  • Good idea

    i use C# and MDX
  • I this is an excellent idea, and I would love to write a short game.
  • We will be bringing back VB.NET samples in future DX SDK releases.. With the new 'quicker' SDK releases, it affords us this opportunity.
  • Yeah, cool idea but it would require a "Yes" to the question if people outside of the US will be allowed to enter :)

  • Seems like a good idea but I think I'm more interested in your book!! Managed DirectX 9 was spectacular! Have any info??
