DIGITURK is Turkey's leading provider of direct-to-home satellite television services. Since its launch in 2000, the company has constantly refined customer relationship and business intelligence processes that support customer retention and minimise churn. The organisation’s ability to respond rapidly to business intelligence and overall employee productivity was compromised by the time required to negotiate the company’s information systems, and log on separately to different applications. DIGITURK decided to implement a business intelligence portal based on Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services and Reporting Services are fully integrated with the portal, supporting the presentation of multi-dimensional data in meaningful, bespoke reports (full case study can be found on Microsoft Customer Evidence Site)

SharePoint Portal is used to provide the fallowing business solutions;

  • SharePoint Portal Server based portal was used to aggregate reports and to enhance business desicion making process. By integrating data from multiple databases, it is now possible for employees to generate business reports automatically via the portal. They can also personalise the interface, creating links to popular applications, collaborate with colleagues, and conduct meetings online.
  • The portal is integrated with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services and Reporting Services, providing the presentation layer for reports and multi-dimensional data in more meaningful reports.
  • Sharepoint Portal holds Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of Digiturk and provides alert mechanism. Alerts are pushed towards client devices which include desktops, laptops and handheld devices.

Quoting from the case study;

Implementation of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 has enabled DIGITURK to use latent value from its existing Microsoft product suite.

  • The Microsoft Office System: Employees can configure their SharePoint Portal Server 2003 interface so that it includes productivity and collaboration tools from numerous Microsoft Office applications. Business
    data from multiple sources can now be imported quickly into Microsoft Office Excel
    spreadsheets for rapid analysis and decision making. Employees can now view and share calendars, organise meeting re-quests, and collaborate using tools such
    as Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2003 from a single interface.

  • Client devices: SharePoint Portal Server 2003 also enables DIGITURK to use desk-top and portable devices that support evi-dence-based decision-making. Employees have the option to set up alerts that are triggered when specified data reaches a particular threshold. This information reaches them in real time and supports rapid decision making based on consistent, accurate data.
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003:
    Recent enhancements to Windows Server 2003, including Windows Media
    Services, enable employees to view streamed media via SharePoint Portal Server.
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000: Analysis Services and Reporting Services are fully integrated with DIGITURK’s portal solution. They support the presentation of multi-dimensional data in meaningful, bespoke reports.
  • Development environment and tools: DIGITURK’s IT department uses Microsoft ASP.NET and the Microsoft .NET Framework to integrate applications with SharePoint Portal Server 2003. This has also enabled the company to establish a long-term IT roadmap where existing applications can be enhanced, and new ones integrated with the portal.

The project began in March 2004. Originally scheduled for launch in December 2004, it went live in September of that year. (Development and Deployment in 6 months :-)

Digiturk used Microsoft .NET Framework and Web parts to integrate information from multiple databases and business intelligence platforms. This technology also supports the integration of common applications so that they can be accessed via the SharePoint Portal Server interface. Employees can now log on once with their user name and password, without having to go through this process every time they switch applications.

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 is now the central hub for company information, delivering daily sales information, subscriber numbers, financials, and other business metrics. It is also used to access business critical intelligence including local and inter-national sales, customer complaint levels, and customer churn.
