ExtremeExperts Monthly Technical Newsletter - Oct '04: Authored by Indian MVP
Hi all,
What do we have in store for this months newsletter? I was wondering where to start. With so much to say and very less space to write, its going to be tough. I thought I would write a line or two on the present technologies that we use day-in-day-out. Its the IIS. Yes, I would like to talk about IIS 6.0 and its less explored territory. IIS 6.0 shipped with the Windows 2003 Server class edition and you can get to see now secure this version has been when compared to its predecessors. Its indeed a treat to watch how lock down by default is. You can see unlike the previous versions where Windows 2000 used to enable all extensions after IIS installation. Here all the extensions are locked down. Security has been taken seriously now from Microsoft and this is no exception.
Some of the other resources that come to my mind are as follows. Firstly the IIS Resource Kit: Download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=56fc92ee-a71a-4c73-b628-ade629c89499&DisplayLang=en. It has some interesting tools like Apache to IIS 6.0 Migration Tool, CustomAuth, IIS Host Helper Service, IISState, Log Parser, Metabase Explorer, Permissions Verifier, RemapUrl, SelfSSL, TinyGet and many more. Next interesting tool is IIS 6.0 Manager for Windows XP, administrators can remotely manage an IIS 6.0 server from a Windows XP Professional workstation. This tool only installs a snap-in for Microsoft Management Console. Download the same from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f9c1fb79-c903-4842-9f6c-9db93643fdb7&DisplayLang=en.
SQL Server 2000 Incremental Bulk Load Case Study
I recently came across this fabulous article on bulkupload casestudy on the MSDN. This paper attempts to answer this question through a case study of incremental bulk load using the BULK INSERT statement on a representative decision support system (DSS) running Microsoft SQL Server 2000 on Microsoft Windows 2003 Server. This whitepaper also targets and explains to general recommendations when a table has no index, has clustered index and has non-clustered index etc. Read the complete article at: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/maintain/incbulkload.mspx
Generating XML Documents from XML Schemas
This is yet another requirement that people ask at the public newsgroups or at the usergroup sessions that I deliver. Is it possible to get an XML document back from the definition? And in this article Priya shows how you can use the classes in the System.XML.Schema namespace of the Microsoft .NET Framework to build a tool that generates sample XML documents that conform to a given schema. Read the article at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/xml/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnxmlnet/html/xmlgen.asp
