December not so good for spamming

December not so good for spamming

December has not been the most prolific month for spammers.  After seeing a huge increase in September and October, November started to go flat.  There was a an upswing in mid-December but this latest two weeks has dropped down over Christmas.

Week             % increase in spam

Sep 11 - Sep 17        -16.06%
Sep 18 - Sep 24         21.71%
Sep 25 - Oct 1         -13.14%
Oct 2  - Oct 8          14.63%
Oct 9  - Oct 15         14.97%
Oct 16 - Oct 22          8.89%
Oct 23 - Oct 29          1.78%
Oct 30 - Nov 5          12.51%
Nov 6  - Nov 12         -9.22%
Nov 13 - Nov 19
-0.77%
Nov 20 - Nov 26          1.87%
Nov 27 - Dec 3           5.86%
Dec 4  - Dec 10          3.58%
Dec 11 - Dec 17         18.03%
Dec 18 - Dec 24
-2.82%
Dec 25 - Jan 1         -18.08%

I guess even spammers take a holiday.  Well, that and the earthquake that disrupted their spamming patterns.  It wasn't a big a drop as I thought but it was definitely noticeable.

  • This propably means that a lot of spam mails are being sent from infected PC's and a lot of people propably don't use their PC the last two weeks of December. My guess is that there will be a peak in the first weeks of January.
