I’ve just tried this on my Windows Mobile phone and it works! But what is it?
Microsoft Tag creates unlimited possibilities for making interactive communications an instant, entertaining part of life. They transform physical media (print advertising, billboards, product packages, information signs, in-store merchandising, or even video images)—into live links for accessing information and entertainment online.
With the Microsoft Tag application, just aim your camera phone at a Tag and instantly access mobile content, videos, music, contact information, maps, social networks, promotions, and more. Nothing to type, no browsers to launch!
It’s simple, useful, and fun. Download the free application to your phone and you’re ready to link real life with the digital world. See a Tag, snap it, and you’re conveniently connected to more information, exclusive discounts, movie trailers, video clips, exhibit details, maps and directions, and much more. It’s a shortcut to fun! Learn more
Tag means no more fumbling with URLs or texting shortcodes! Just launch the Microsoft Tag application, snap the Tag, and in a blink you can view the content! Go to gettag.mobi with your mobile phone.
What’s the educational application for this? I’m not sure yet, but tagging school web sites or portals for easy access would be a good start. Take a look at the Tag web site as I’m sure that once students see this technology they’ll be using it in ways that we haven’t even thought of.
BPOS = Business Productivity Online Suite
There are a number of opportunities for partners from BPOS. Three examples include:
1) Software referral fee.
2) Traditional services for data migration, implementation and design.
3) Developing applications that can connect to BPOS via a web service.
What type of partner would be interested in BPOS for these three investment areas?
1) All partners can sign up to receive a referral fee
2) Microsoft partners that may wish to offer these services include Value Added Resellers, ISV’s and System Integrator’s
3) Microsoft partners that are well equipped for developing applications include Web Agencies, Value Added Resellers, Custom Development partners and Independent Software Vendors. Traditional System Integrator’s may also be interested in getting involved if they have a skilled development team.
How can partners create ISV/VAR applications that connect to BPOS?
Microsoft is looking for partners to create loosely coupled solutions that integrate with BPOS via a web service.
Examples of loosely coupled solutions can be found here http://www.microsoft.com/online/partner/solutions-showcase.mspx
There are a variety of different options available for connecting to BPOS. These may include web service connections from hosted SaaS environments or on-premise solutions.

DreamSpark High School Provides Students with Free Software to Pursue Their Academic & Professional Goals
Yesterday (March 26) at the Government Leaders Forum, in Washington D.C. Bill Gates announced the expansion of the DreamSpark program to include high school students worldwide. DreamSpark was originally available only to University students. By offering free access to its latest software, Microsoft is empowering students to pursue their academic and professional goals, and become the next generation of IT and business leaders. All press information, videos and images are available here: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/events/glfamericas/default.mspx
What is Microsoft DreamSpark™?
Microsoft DreamSpark ™ is a program that provides no-cost access to Microsoft designer and development tools and training for verified high school and university students around the world, to support and advance their learning and skills through technical design, technology, math, science and engineering activities. This program equips tomorrow’s developers with the professional tools to inspire and create today. https://www.dreamspark.com
Here’s the software, straight from the DreamSpark home page:
There’s quite a few products, but I think some of the most popular will be Expression Studio, Visual Studio Professional, XNA Game Studio and the Robotics Developer Studio.
Read the FAQ web page which contains a good summary of the programme, and how to activate it for your school. Basically, somebody in the school registers, and they receive product keys to distribute to students. But students just download the software they want directly from the website – you don’t need to get involved in distribution.
There’s also free training courses and materials available for students – including free books, “learning snacks” for Silverlight, Virtualisation, Web 2.0 development, Windows Server, and the free Microsoft IT Academy Student Pass. And there’s even free certification – students can claim a voucher for a free “Microsoft Technical Specialist” exam.
The free exam offer is especially good if you’ve got customers with IT students leaving this summer – they can get a head start on students from other schools!
The free software is good for all IT students, whatever year they’re in.

Windows 7 and Windows Vista application compatibility lab - 31st March in London. [FREE 4 Day course]
The purpose of this lab is to provide training on the changes in Windows 7 and Windows Vista that are most likely to cause compatibility issues with client applications designed to run on Windows XP or earlier. Microsoft application compatibility experts will be on hand to help test and debug those applications and, either mitigate or identify the fixes required to resolve any problems that may be discovered. The intention is that you leave at the end of the week with your applications working on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
The primary target for these labs is applications that are already known to have compatibility issues with Windows Vista or applications that have never been tested on Vista. If your application runs on Windows Vista, then it is very likely that it will also run on Windows 7, so we will be running either another lab or a briefing on Windows 7 ONLY issues once we are closer to the release of Windows 7.
All client applications are welcome, whether they are written in .NET, C++, VB6, etc. Please bring with you an installable version of your application(s), the symbols (PDBs), and the source code. If you have any special requirements then please contact us before registering to see if we can accommodate these.

You’ve seen lots of information on IE8 but we want to share with you some of the key highlights from our efforts in the UK, and then ask for your help in helping making this a successful launch:
We have an On-Network campaign running in April featuring 5 key UK Consumer Brand Partners. These are Tesco.com, rightmove.co.uk, asos.com, direct.gov.uk, and ebay.co.uk. Their Web Slices, Accelerators and Visual Search add-ons make it easier and quicker for UK consumers to find what they need on the web. The campaign call-to-action will drive installation of IE8 by 1) explaining the benefits of these new features and 2) highlighting how to use them to great effect with these key UK brands.
Internet Explorer 8 for MSN will launch in the UK today (March 20) simultaneously with the standard version of Internet Explorer 8.0 (get it here). This gives consumers all the great new features and benefits of Internet Explorer 8 as well as the MSN home page, Live Search, the MSN Toolbar, MSN Web Slices and the Multimap accelerator.
Features like Web Slices, Accelerators and Visual Search not only deliver exciting new user experiences, they also provide a great opportunity for web developers to differentiate their sites and to build user loyalty. Our Developer and Platform Evangelism team has been working closely with our partners to create local Web Slices, Accelerators, and Visual Search add-ons. Delivering differentiated experiences is crucial to start winning back usage share for IE. We have already developed many of these features with several major UK brands and will be working to add many more in the coming weeks and months.
In this version of IE, we have made a strong commitment to driving web standards. This is a key benefit to the developer community as it will simplify web development across platforms. In this move toward standards, we are actively working with a number of websites in the UK to ensure a great consumer experience with the new browser. We have made lots of progress in this area. We have also been visiting top customers to verify site compatibility. We are working on proactively reaching out to these customers and working with them on addressing site compatibility issues. We have tools that can assist our customers which can be found here “How Do I Fix My Site Today” For more info for site administrators, visit IE Compatibility Centre
This is just a part of the great work that teams across our business are driving for this launch. While we’ve seen declining IE share over the last months, we believe this is where we turn things around.
How can you help with the launch?
Help us with internal deployment, download IE8 here (if you’re already on Windows 7 beta, you’ll get the new version with the next upgrade)
