Whoops – when I wrote about the Ultimate Steal (Office 2007 Ultimate Edition for £38.95, only for students) I said it was open to all UK students who have a .ac.uk email address (and staff too).
Of course, I’d forgotten something – we have also added Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man students and staff from the beginning this year.
So that means if you’re a student or staff member, and you meet the criteria (including having an email address that ends in '.ac.im', '.ac.gg', '.ac.je') then you’re in – part of the merry Ultimate Steal band!
(I was reminded about this as I packed my suitcase for a trip to Jersey tomorrow. Normally, a trip to Jersey in September is nice and summery – but not this year I think!)
Why doesn't Microsoft offer a Mac version of Office in the Ultimate Steal programme?

You asked about the Mac version. Sadly, it's not yet available as an electronic download (as the Windows version is), but we're hoping it will be early in 2009. Keep any eye out for news in Jan.

What about us 6th form students who have opted to stay at school for further education rather than go to college? We have email addresses that end in sch.uk and as such are not eligible according to the website.

Unfortunately, we had to draw the line somewhere, and we ended up drawing it at the point where students have a ".ac.uk" email address. We didn't feel that it would be fair to extend it out to students with a ".sch.uk" email address, when most school students don't have access to an email address like this (something like 25% of students in schools have access).
So the preferred route for school students (and this includes Sixth Form students) is to go to one of our partners who offer Academic licences for all school students:
