When we released the worlds biggest PAC-MAN during the MIX Keynote we knew it was going to be popular, but I don’t think anyone at Microsoft (with maybe the exception of Michael Kordahi) really expected it to be as popular as it has been. Users of the site have managed to eat over one Billion PAC-DOTS during a combined playing time of 22 years.
Staggering really when you think about it. All of the stats can be found on this page.
If you want to know more about how the project came about Michael Kordahi produced the following interview with the team at Soap Creative that built the site. I’d recommend watching it, if for nothing else, to listen to the weird way Australians pronounce data… Darta.
One of may favourite things about the worlds biggest packman is that you can create your own levels. In the first week 10,000 mazes were created and to date 40,000 mazes have been added. If you think of each of these mazes as being the size of the screen on an original PAC-MAN arcade machine (58 x 58 cm), then you would need a screen twice the size of the pitch at Wembley fit the PAC-MAN universe.
Of all the user submitted mazes, 6.7% had to be removed due to, well, naked parts 80% of those naked parts were the type that uniquely belong to the male of our species.
If you want to take a look at some of the great mazes that have been submitted, the team behind building the site put together this tumblr to showcase the best ones. My favourite maze of all, is the one you get if you go to a broken link on the site:
The UK has a total of 63,070,022 points… which makes us 5th. A statistic that I’m not massively proud of, and something I'd like to change. If you were born or grew up in the 80’s it’s imperative that you get playing. Your country needs you.
