Learning with Promethean ActivEngage Delivers Immediate Results and Enhances Use of Microsoft Surface
Transforming education inside and outside the classroom means thinking differently about how teaching is delivered and the way teachers capture and use student performance data. Mobile devices and tablets can be valuable tools, but without the software or applications to integrate them into lessons, they are ineffective in advancing learning.
This is where Promethean’s virtual assessment for learning software ActivEngage can help. It turns any handheld device, including Microsoft Surface and other Windows 8 powered devices, into a robust 21st Century teaching and learning tool. The app works on school or student owned devices, allows students to contribute to collaborative exercises, and lets them provide real-time feedback in class.
Promethean ActivEngage sets the standard in assessment software for tablets, smartphones and traditional computers. It is a foundational component of a fully integrated education solution that seamlessly connects assessment to instruction.
Students can use the app to share their ideas from a brainstorming session to a central display, such as a Promethean ActivBoard. They can also use the app to personalise learning by working their way through a series of questions and challenges at their own pace and level. At the same time, the teacher can monitor individual progress and intervene efficiently and effectively when necessary.
ActivEngage doesn’t stop here. Educators can export the data into Microsoft Excel™ format for further analysis.
If you are considering a tablet initiative for your classroom or school, Promethean ActivEngage can help you improve your return on investment. It is an ideal solution to increase student engagement and facilitate collaborative and to enable teachers to personalised learning and improve learning outcomes.

Create Interactive and Engaging Lessons with Promethean ActivOffice
Interactive whiteboards such as the Promethean ActivBoard 500 Pro are designed to facilitate a very high level of interaction with content.
Promethean ActivOffice embeds a unique toolbar within the Microsoft PowerPoint ribbon giving teachers and students access to new functionalities, including the ability to annotate directly on whole group activities or conduct simple polls or assessments using Promethean learner response systems (ActivExpression, ActiVote and ActivEngage). Using the Promethean ActivOffice features, presenters can reinforce key content, make presentations more memorable, and engage audiences, transforming their experience from being passive listeners to engaged participants.
Promethean ActivOffice can be used with or without an ActivBoard but when used with Promethean’s next-generation ActivBoard 500, presenters and participants have the option to use the pen and touch capability of PowerPoint and Windows optimally. Educators and students can use the right tool for the right task. It all just works naturally. Use multi-touch to swipe through slides and zoom into media and the ActivPen to instantly make notes and drawing. The unique Promethean ActivOffice tool bar enables access to masses of PowerPoint based curriculum content from publishers with no modification needed. Just open the file and go. There is no new software to be learned!
Promethean ActivOffice adds key interactive whiteboard software features into PowerPoint
Want to add a page ‘on the fly’ to keep some written notes and comments from the class or to explain an idea? It’s simple – just use the Insert Page button in the Promethean ActivOffice toolbar at any time during your lesson and start writing.
Would you like instant feedback to know if the class is keeping up? You can author questions that appear as PowerPoint pages or ask questions ‘ad-hoc’. Do quick quizzes, or ask for words or numbers in freeform response mode to really help personalise your lesson.
Want to know how an individual did? You can export any feedback collected into Excel for detailed analysis afterwards.
Are you using Office 365 and want to share the presentation and notes with your students at the end of the lesson? It’s easy. Simply upload the PowerPoint file to Microsoft Sharepoint or Skydrive, and your students can view and edit it using the Microsoft Web Applications. No file conversion, no fuss – it is the power of ‘the cloud’ harnessed so you can focus on the teaching and learning.

After some great feedback following the launch of our Windows 8 in education eBook, we are thrilled to announce the launch of our Windows 8 in education UK microsite.
The microsite is designed to help surface, excuse the pun, some key Windows 8 in education assets that look closely at our new OS specifically through an edu lens.
In addition to the eBook, a key new asset that has literally just been added to the microsite is our Windows 8 in education video. The video showcases how both UCL and Hartsbrook E-Act Free School are using Windows 8 to build 21st skills and create more emotional connections with learning.
I was involved in the filming of this video and both institutions are doing some amazing work with Windows 8, and technology in general. I personally loved the impact that Windows 8 had on the primary age students at Hartsbrook, though. Seeing the look on the young students faces when a picture they had just taken on their Windows Phone seamlessly synced to SkyDrive on their Windows 8 classroom PC's was awesome! Charlotte Beckhurst, and the rest of the team at Hartsbrook, are doing some fantastic work and I can't wait to see her share her experiences on our stand at Bett next week.
If you are coming to Bett and want to check out Charlotte's session, our full Learn Live Theatre schedule is available via our Bett 2013 microsite. We hope to see you there!
Windows 8 apps also sit front and centre of our new Windows 8 in education microsite. With a rapidly growing selection of education apps from the likes of Pearson, RM and Autology, the education category in the Windows Store has definitely been one of the most dynamic and innovative areas since launch.
Our app showcases offer a detailed overview of specific apps combined with screencasts, screenshots and information to allow you to learn more about how the app can help directly within your institution.
The intention is not to list every education app in the store, but offer a curated overview of a selection of UK apps available both today and over the coming months.
We will be adding fresh content, especially around new apps, to the site on a regular basis so be sure to come back regularly and keep up to date with what is going on. We hope you find the site useful and informative look forward to sharing additional updates over the coming weeks/months.
If you have a favourite education app, we would love to hear more in the comments below. Also, if you are attending Bett 2013, make sure you pop over and say hi. We are on stands D270 and E270.
Guest post by European Electronique, one of our Microsoft Bett 2013 partners
Bett 2013 will start an exciting new year for both European Electronique and our customers with the launch of a new range of innovative products and services. Building on last year’s mobility and client to cloud theme this year will see the official launch of ‘freedom’ the definitive cloud service for education. Making the most of readily available services from the world’s leading technology company Microsoft and combining this with market leading cloud applications and an approach to integration that maximises the use of the web and Windows 8 whilst minimising cost, and providing ultimate flexibility, ‘freedom’ will meet the exacting demands of schools, academies, free schools, UTC’s and even colleges of Further Education.
Now that most educators have embraced a strategy that integrates a range of cloud based services the discussion has moved to ‘how’ from ‘when’. To help in the next stage of this journey and to help bridge some of the complex issues that need to be addressed we are delighted to be running a series of customer led workshops, including; Steve Bolingbrook MD Kunskapsskolan ~ the critical importance of ICT in the Swedish model; James Penny ICT Director Harris Federation ~ Steps to building your own cloud service; Sarah Gore Chair West London Free School ~ The ICT decision is critical to sustainability. Guest speakers from Microsoft will also be presenting on the latest developments including Office 365, Azure and Windows 8 explaining how when combined they deliver a compelling new ways of learning and teaching.
Maximising the impact of your ICT investment will also be a major focus and the show will also see the launch of the EE educator programme. Experts will be on hand and able to advise on a wide range of topics from integrating Windows 8, Windows RT and other devices into the curriculum through to the practicalities of running student purchase schemes to the introduction in game based learning into the classroom. To give practical help in these areas we will be running a series of lunch time workshops on BYOD schemes, wireless networking and hands on sessions.
The stand will also showcase the latest innovations in wireless, storage and device technologies from the world’s leading manufacturers.

In a rapidly changing knowledge society, besieged with a continuous onset of new technologies, students need to develop a wide range of competencies that give them the skills to manage change throughout their lives. Traditional competencies like languages, math and science, and basic digital skills, will continue to be important, but competences that enforce lifelong learning, or “learning to learn” skills, will become more valuable and indeed a necessity to sustain a globally competitive economy. These key competencies include creativity, the ability to think laterally, adaptability, a willingness to take initiatives, and entrepreneurship.
The seeds for lifelong learning are propagated in the first stages of education and nurtured throughout life through training. With this in mind, traditional forms of formal and informal learning must be reconsidered and new systems developed that enable students, both young and older, to become part of a new digital era. This modern learning environment extends to everything from content and curricula, assessment, learning and teaching practices, organization, values and leadership, collaboration and communication, and infrastructure. It provides the opportunity for learners to develop real-world 21st Century skills.
Essential to this new environment is the seamless integration of mobile devices into the educational system and pedagogy. Mobile devices have become a ubiquitous part of our everyday lives and indeed can no longer be excluded from mainstream education and training. Smartphones and tablets are increasingly being used to enhance student engagement. They provide a new way to create and consume educational materials and services and a means to deliver personalised learning. Mobile devices of course deliver anytime anywhere learning opportunities, introducing a new paradigm in learning.
AuthorKit Reader, part of the AuthorKit suite, delivers an engaging and intriguing experience by allowing learners to preview, navigate and interact with e-lessons.
We have been working alongside Microsoft to deliver state-of-the-art tools to teachers and schools to allow them to build a dynamic social learning environment that opens a space for creativity and collaboration, and that ultimately enhances learning outcomes. The launch of Windows 8 is a new milestone in these efforts to bring students, teachers, parents, and administrators together to change traditional pedagogical practices in a sustainable manner.
Our touch handwriting tool is a Windows 8 app that teaches children aged 3 to 5 how to write by tracing letters, numbers and shapes with their finger or by using a stylus. We will also reveal a new Windows 8-based studying suite this year at BETT. It includes a teacher authoring tool for creating interactive digital content, an offline desktop e-reader for students, and a student mobile app that seamlessly integrates with our social learning platform, CLG.
Based on Microsoft technologies, CLG combines social networking with easy-to-use tools for teaching, learning, management and administration. It provides a dynamic educational space enriched with collaboration, personalisation, interactivity, real-time feedback and assessment, and mobile learning.
StudyLIVE combines learners’ most needed functionalities into a single app, making the management of day-to-day learning easy.
Our new learning analytics tool is a must-have for school and district managers. It brings together disperse and large volumes of PK-12 learning data (linking assignments and exams, online social interactions, extracurricular activities, etc.) into a single view. It provides the ability to interact with this data to make timely, informed decisions, identify the root cause of discrepancies, and understand performance trends. School administrators and policy makers can access real-time information from mobile devices and easily produce informative reports.
Drop by our booth (F260) to give these new products a spin. Learn more about how to transform your school and class into an innovative, creative and collaborative learning environment, and what steps you can take to engage students, teachers, parents, and school administrators in the process.
