sql-azure-logo-lgThe May service update has been released for SQL Azure that includes Management REST API, multiple servers per subscription, a JDBC driver, and DAC Framework update.

Microsoft announced new enhancements and features specifically requested by developers and IT professionals for a future release. These include the following:

  • Microsoft StreamInsight’s complex event processing capabilities available as a service.
  • Integration of import and export features in the management portal, which helps customers simplify archiving a Microsoft SQL Azure Database and provides migration between on-premises Microsoft SQL Server and SQL Azure
  • Enhanced management experience through the portal, including enhancements to the Web-based database manager (formerly called Microsoft Project Code-Name “Project Houston”), for additional schema management, and a new service for managing SQL Azure databases through an Open Data Protocol endpoint.

The announcements were made at Tech•Ed in Atlanta this week.

SQL Azure Service Update

A new May 2011 service update, includes four key improvements the engineering teams have been hard at work on:

  • SQL Azure Management REST API – a web API for managing SQL Azure servers.
  • Multiple servers per subscription – create multiple SQL Azure servers per subscription.
  • JDBC Driver – updated database driver for Java applications to access SQL Server and SQL Azure.
  • DAC Framework 1.1 – making it easier to deploy databases and in-place upgrades on SQL Azure.

SQL Azure Innovations

The SQL Azure team has announced new innovations.

  • Project codename “Austin”, will make Microsoft StreamInsight’s complex event processing capabilities available as a service.  This allows building event-driven applications where the analysis of the events is performed in the cloud. A public community will be released on the SQL Azure Labs site later this year for developer preview and feedback.
  • Integration of Import/Export features in the management portal helps simplify archiving a SQL Azure database, and provides migration between on-premises SQL Server and SQL Azure. The features will be available later this summer.
  • Enhanced Management Experience through the portal, including enhancements to the web based database manager (formerly called “Project Houston”) for additional schema management, and a new service for managing SQL Azure databases through an ODATA endpoint. The features will be available later this summer.
