    Welcome, New Guys

I'd like to take this opportunity publically welcome Sanjay Jain and Bruce Kyle to our blog. Sanjay's arrival preceeded Bruce's so I'll introduce him first... Sanjay joins our team from deep in heart of Delaware, and has extensive experience with CRM and ERP products - he even knows what "GLAPAR functionality" is - just ask him. We're looking forward to his insights on all things Titan and Fenway related. Bruce just recently got "blue badged" after spending some quality time on Warren's HiPo...

Longhorn Beta 3 & Windows Virtualization Services

Ok, a couple of people have asked me about the availability of Longhorn Server Virtualization with the recent announcement of Longhorn Beta 3 (see my previous post ). There is not currently a beta available for Windows Virtualization Services in Longhorn. This will ship separately (within 180 days of Longhorn launch) and a Beta will be available in the second half of this year. The Virtualization team blog talks about this. That being said, Virtual Server 2005 R2 runs great on Longhorn. If you...

    MOSS Internet Licensing for ISVs

At the risk of alienating the entire audience by posting about licensing, I want to provide the answer to a question I get asked frequently by ISVs. While lots of ISVs find the features of MOSS cool and compelling, they typically raise concerns about how to license it for sites that have some sort of public facing aspect (Internet and/or Extranet.) After my standard response of "try the partner helpdesk" grew tiresome, I decided to do a little research into the topic by asking my team members...

    Longhorn Server Beta 3 Available

Microsoft announced the availability of Longhorn Beta 3 last night. Check out the Windows Server blog to get more information on what's new in Beta 3 and all the excitement around this significant milestone! You can download it from our web site today! p.s. Powershell is now finally in the box ( metaphorically speaking of course ). Being a command line nut, I just love the capabilities of Powershell. If you haven't had time to play with it yet – it's really worth of an hour or so on a Friday afternoon...

WPF and ISVs - a quick look back, and a call to action

Much has been written about the Windows Presentation Foundation and the opportunities it enables by bringing designers together with developers to produce truly differentiated user experiences. Through the ISV programs we offer, our team has been engaging ISVs in this discussion for the last 18 months or so, and work some of these organizations have undertaken with this technology is pretty amazing. What's been the most surprising to me, though, is the way in which WPF can transform applications...

ABC’s for Software Vendors who want to partner with Microsoft

In our role as ISV Architect Evangelists we often are asked how to start partnering with Microsoft. Hopefully this will help get some of them started. ==== ABC’s for Software Vendors who want to partner with Microsoft There are many benefits for Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) who wish to partner with Microsoft. They fall into 3 main categories: • Technical Enablement • Marketing Support • Software License Grants In order to provide a consistent means to deliver benefits...

    Web Service Interoperability

In case you missed it, last week the body charged with driving real-world web service interoperability ( WS-I ) has released version 1.0 of the Basic Security Profile. For ISV's, the WS-I work gives you a target to build & test your services against that will give you some assurance that your product will actually be interoperable with web services clients and services on various platforms and from various vendors or open source proejcts. In the case of BSP 1.0, that taget grows to include...

    VSTA 2005 SDK Launch Announcement

I was a little surprised to hear that some of the ISVs I work with had never heard of VSTA. Visual Studio Tools for Applications (VSTA) is a platform for Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to add managed application customization to their applications. Notably, the VSTA team recently launched their VSTA 2005 SDK . Check out the VSTA team blog where they have posted a video to take you through the features and design goals of VSTA. VSTA will have a big impact for ISVs that allow systems integrators...

Expression Web & Blend to be Included in MSDN Premium

That's right, we listened to all the feedback, did some more market research and decided to make Expression Web and Expression Blend available to MSDN Premium subscribers! This is exciting for ISVs because many of you do not have a designer on staff and will have developers creating your UI. The current story for WPF forms with Visual Studio is still a little weak until Visual Studio codename "Orcas" ships, and using Expression Blend is more attractive. You will now be able to download (soon) Expression...

Creating MSDN Style Help from your Source Code

I stumbled across some information on "Sandcastle" this morning. Sandcastle creates documentation for any managed class library. There is a lot of good information on the Sandcastle teams blog . For internal documentation, or for documenting your APIs that you are exposing to allow your customers to integrate with your software I think you will find this an interesting product. The latest release is the March CTP which you can download here. And you can read the announcment around the March CTP...

    CTO Summit Redux

Well, another fiscal year, another ISV CTO Summit. Here are some completely random thoughts about the event as I sequester myself around the one of the few remaining power outlets in the black hole of airline travel that is otherwise known as O'Hare Airport. At this year's summit, we were treated to: Blue laptop gelpacks with copies of Vista Ultimate courtesy Larry "Mr. Vista" Gregory A few hours of billiards courtesy Warren "8-ball" Wilbee An illegal drive down memory lane courtesy Ashish...

    Day 3 Dispatch from Convergence

Continuing my coverage of integration related talks, I popped in on the CRM Analytics session yesterday. There’s quite a bit that can be done with a base analytics platform, but there are even more compelling scenarios built around predictive analysis. In the demo I saw, CRM opportunities were assigned an “attractiveness” measure based upon the “relationship profitability” computed for each customer in the CRM database. By assigning attributes on the opportunity and correlating those to existing...

    Day 2 Dispatch from Convergence

Covergence is an aptly-named conference, especially this year’s edition. Today, we announced several Dynamics related products, including Dynamics Client for Microsoft Office. This technology will bring business data in our ERP and CRM products to the places where they’re most often used – the Microsoft Office suite of applications. I would encourage you to check out Dynamics Client for Microsoft Office as well as the Dynamics SNAP add-ins to get a good sense of what’s possible where Dynamics meets...

    Day 1 Dispatch from Convergence

Well, I made it to the conference… Convergence has a different feel to it than the TechEds or the PDCs I’ve attended. For one thing, the attendees seem to be much more international, and for another thing, there seems to be a much better gender balance here. Also, the community here seems to be tighter-knitted than most, with many long time Convergence veterans returning for what’s become an annual event for them. After reading through the event syllabus, I decided that I would attend as many...

For those of you who are Dynamics inclined, I'll be heading out to Convergence to hear plans for our CRM and ERP product lines (AX, GP, NAV, and SL.) • 0 Comments
I'm going to be hosting a webcast on April 24th on Debugging Crashing Applications. This is a follow-up to my first webcast on the Microsoft Debugging Tools for Windows Package. The webcast will begin at 10am Pacific time and last for 1 hour. Here's a description of the event: Description: When it comes to developing applications, debugging is one essential step. During the development process you can debug the code to your heart's content; but what happens once you sell your application? What...

    What makes a good Architect?

So, about a week ago I posted an article about our ArcReady & ArcCouncil events. This got me to thinking, what really does make a good architect? Every organization is different for sure, but I believe that there are some common skills that an architect must possess. You have to have a good understanding of technology and how it all fits together. Not a deep understanding per se, just a broad technical understanding. For instance, you need to know enough about WCF and how and where it can be...
