In Support of Our Troops

In Support of Our Troops

By Teresa Carlson, Microsoft Vice President of U.S. Federal Government Sales

We received some great news this week when the Department of Defense announced that Microsoft will receive the 2009 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.  It’s the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for outstanding support of employees serving in the National Guard and Reserve.   Microsoft was one of only 15 employers selected from across the nation, and we are humbled to be a recipient, especially because the nomination comes from our people.

The Freedom award is managed by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a DoD agency that focuses on promoting a culture in which all employers support and value the military service of their employees.   It’s a mission that Microsoft takes very seriously, with generous policies regarding leave, differential pay, and medical benefits for our people and their families.  In 2009 we had 40 employees on military leave, and we have a very active community of service members – from active duty to veterans.

We witness the integrity and dedication of our military customers every day, and there is no better way to support our troops than to take care of those in our employee family who faithfully serve.

  • Outstanding story!!!  I really liked seeing this, yes I like Microsoft and make my living supporting Microsoft products so I'm a little biased but I was also an Army soldier.

So many times you will see companies saying "we support the troops", but their actions don't really reflect that motto.  That really bothers me here in the DC area when many of those same companies want DoD contracts.

You all are backing it up with your actions and that is great for all the troops and their families.  Thanks and Hoooaaahh!!
