Hello all,

We’re hosting a one day, free technical event in Redmond on May 18, 2012 intended for developers who want to write Metro apps for Windows 8 with C++.

Redmond WA, Microsoft campus, bldg 92.
Date:  May 18th, 2012
Time:  9 AM to 5 PM for sessions, Q&A and a small social event afterwards.
Speakers:  We will update the list of speakers early next week, we are still negotiating session times & speakers to cram as much as we can into a single day.  Rest assured most of them are from the product team and yes, Herb Sutter will do the opening keynote and the first session.
Meals:  We will have some light breakfast, lunch, snacks and appetizers + drinks at the end of the day.

These Windows-specific talks will use both portable ISO C++ and Visual C++-specific compiler extensions; for brevity below we'll refer to both as "C++" (i.e., this day is about Visual C++, not Visual C#/VB or JavaScript).

If you are a new C++ developer wanting to learn about the writing Metro style apps, an intermediate developer looking to reuse their C++ code and skills, or an experienced C++ developer looking to squeeze every ounce of performance out of your Metro style app, this event is for you. We will have pragmatic advice for every developer writing Metro style apps and games with XAML or DirectX and C++

Register for the event here!

  • C++ for Windows 8, Keynote by Herb Sutter

Please spread the word.

  • I'll say the same thing here that I said on Jaime's blog:  Please record this content and make it available on the web.  I can't justify a round trip coast-to-coast flight for a 1-day camp.  But this is exactly the kind of material I would like to see, and XAML + C++ + DirectX is exactly the kind of Metro apps I wish to write.

  • Could me worse. I want to attend but I'm in Sao Paulo, Brazil :-/. Hope they post the slides online

  • Web recording would be *great*. Can't come to the States all the way from Finland..

  • You guys are still close. I can't fly from India for a 1-day session. And secondly, how do they expect to cover so much in one day?

  • All sessions will be recorded and made available for on-demand viewing on Channel 9.

  • I would like to see a demonstration of creating a C++ "Hello World"  Metro application that has a radio button for world and city, and a text box. If world is checked, then the output to the textbox is "hello world"  otherwise "hello city"

And I want to see the GUI created in XAML WITHOUT typing any XAML text to define the GUI.

    Is this easy or impossible?

  • I finally noticed the sideways printing on the right of the XAML design which said Toolbar and Properties.   Go ahead and laugh experienced people, but not everybody has been playing with XAML for years.
