I guess I'll start with why I love drag and drop in Virtual PC. Firstly - Virtual PC is the most drag and drop friendly application I know.

  • Want to mount a CD .ISO? Drag and drop it on to the CD icon.
  • Want to change the .VHD? Drag and drop the new .VHD file onto the 'Virtual hard disk file:' text box and it will put the right information in there.
  • Want to create a shortcut to a specific virtual machine? Drag and drop the virtual machine off of the Virtual PC console onto the desktop.
  • Want to copy a file into or out of a virtual machine? Drag and drop the file - and you are done.

So why do I hate drag and drop in Virtual PC?

Simple - it was originally implemented on Virtual PC for Macintosh - where most people only have one mouse button. As a result - drag and drop on Virtual PC (for Windows) only works if you use the left mouse button.

Now - my background in operating systems is actually very OS/2 heavy - and on OS/2 you can only drag and drop with the right mouse button. In Windows you can drag and drop with the right mouse button with no problems - but not in Virtual PC.

Drives me crazy...

The other reason why I hate it is that it generates the most cryptic error messages: 'An error has occurred during a drag and drop error (d3)'

???

I don't even know what that means. We should really fix that.

Cheers,
Ben
