Changing the default location the Virtual PC uses for virtual machines

A regular question I hear is "How can I stop Virtual PC from storing all of my virtual machines in the 'My Virtual Machines' folder in 'My Documents'?".  The answer is simple - but obscure.  To change this you need to create a system environment variable called 'MYVIRTUALMACHINES' with a value of the path that you want Virtual PC to use for the default location for storing virtual machines.

Cheers,
Ben

  • This proves that the one who can read has the advantage: this is also stated in the additional docs which are installed with the VPC SP1. ;)
  • Thanks - I was wondering about that.

I'm sure the question you regularly get asked once you've answered that one is...

"Can we have a setting for that under File>Options?"
  • I usually just create a junction point instead of messing around with config settings. Much easier. :)
  • Thank you very much. I've been wondering how to do that.
