I am constantly helping people to resolve network connectivity issues and just the other day I found out that we have a really nice KB article already written on this issue:

Cheers,

  • Does this issue also affect Virtual PC?

I understand Virtual PC emulates the same NIC as Virtual Server, so it seems likely.
  • My intuition is the same as Guy Gur-Ari's, that this issue is likely one of the same issues that affects networking in Virtual PC. It's pretty obviously not the only one though.
  • I discovered that KB after networking was disabled on my host system. In the guest OS, I was trying to install software from the host OS.
Both OSes were running Windows Server 2003. The host became nearly useless: I never found a way of re-enabling networking that didn't involve a host reboot. Yuck.

Several host reboots later, I seem to have it working with DisableTaskOffload. I tried the loopback stuff, to no avail.
