Virtual Server and NTBackup

Virtual Server and NTBackup

  • Comments 4

When I read this post that states that the VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Services) functionality in Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Beta 2 did not work with NTBackup - I was worried that we might have done something wrong, but a little bit of investigation revealed that this is actually expected.  It appears that NTBackup does not support backing up software that provides its own VSS support.

Bummer.

However, you can use the tools that are provided in VSS SDK or a full backup program with VSS support to backup Virtual Server.

Cheers,
Ben

  • OK, so NTBackup is out of race, but how about CompletePC Backup from Vista?

    Will CompletePC Backup be supported?
  • I'm not sure I follow your critique.  The post your refence says that NT backup cannot be used.  A 3rd party product must be used for live backup of a VHD via VSS.  So, what are you saying differently?

Question #1:  Why can't NT Backup be upgrade to support Microsoft's own VSS technology?  This seems like a big hole. Believe it or not, a lot of us use NTBackup and it is "good enough"; know we'll have to go buy some 3rd party can of worms backup and change all our procedures.

Question #2: Is there a faq or list somewhere of 3rd party backup products that are Microsoft certified (not vendor self-stated) for VSS?

  • SQL Server has its own VSS writer, and NTBackup backs it up just fine...
