BgInfo and Virtual Machines

Here is a handy tool to use with virtual machines.  BgInfo allows you to display information about the system on the desktop wallpaper including the computer name, IP address, service pack version, and more.

This is useful when you have a large number of virtual machines and need to be able to quickly identify key information about the system.  Alternatively - it can help if you have virtual machines on a mobile computer and need to know what network settings the virtual machine currently has.

If you want to keep the information up-to-date you should schedule a task under Windows to run it periodically.

(One final note - I do appreciate that the screenshot used on the BgInfo page is of a computer with a name of OHVPC-SOURCE :-)

  • BGInfo also works on server core which is neat

  • Installation of the VM Additions adds a couple of registry keys that you can query with bginfo.  They're under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Guest\Parameters.

We have a pretty dynamic environment with up to 100 virtual machines running across eight hosts.  Bginfo is configured to display the name of the host, as well as the Virtual Server "friendly name."  This has taken a lot of the guesswork out of supporting the VMs!
