Hyper-V Program Manager
I have been using a virtual machine for my main desktop for just over a week now – and so far I am enjoying it (all the blog posts this week have been written from inside the virtual machine).
The first problem that I faced was getting networking up and running correctly. In the past I have blogged about using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to allow virtual machines to get Internet connectivity over a wireless network adapter.
However there are two problems with this approach:
So I needed to come up with another solution, and I found a surprisingly simple one. What I have done is to use the built-in functionality of Windows that allows you to bridge two or more network adapters together.
To do this I:
I have tried doing this in the past, and it did not work (I believe I tried this on Windows XP) but with Windows Server 2008 R2 it works perfectly. Now my virtual machine is able to connect to any network that my physical computer connects to – and it is not hidden behind ICS.
I use a similar approach but have discovered that I can't add my GSM connection to this bridge which causes me a big problem when on the road.
I used a similar approach with Nintendo's DS WiFi adapter. It's basically a USB dongle that registers itself as a network adapter, then the included software uses Internet Connection Sharing to allow the DS network adapter access to the internet. Of course the problem is that I have the service that powers ICS turned off because I didn't need it. Before I turned it on I checked to see if bridging the two adapters would work... and it did.
Wasn't network bridging introduced in Windows XP? I believe it should work with XP as well.

For GSM / dial up using Internet Connection Sharing
I tried this with Windows XP but could not get it to work with a wireless interface
Yeah, Ben tried that. Unfortunately, my GSM adapater's property sheets never show me a "Sharing" tab. Kinda frustrating but I'll take any guidance I can get!
Just tried <with R2> and the bridge option is greyed out... did I miss something?
