The Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 RTM are now available.  This includes the Hyper-V management tools, which are supported for managing Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008, Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 and Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2.

You can download the bits here:

  • Ben,

When will the standalone hyper-v server 2008 r2 be released (technet/msdn) will this also be ont august the 14th? (like 2008 r2 itself)

  • I downloaded it but 2 things.  1 the pointer for help goes to a non existent page, also the RTM x86 package which states it runs for 64 bit RTM of Windows 7 doesn't install.  it tells you that "the update is not applicable for your computer".  have you installed on 64 bit RTM of Win 7 (I have ultimate edition)

  • I just upgraded my Vista x64 Enterprise machine (which had RSAT for Vista x64 on it) tol Windows 7 Enterprise. If I wanted to install the Windows 7 version of RSAT (which I'm guessing would be the right thing) should I uninstall the Vista version before I attempt a Windows 7 RSAT install? If so, I see it in "Turning Windows features on or off" but there isn't a uninstall there. I'm guessing I need to look at "view installed updates" to uninstall it?

  • Powershell -

    Sorry, I cannot say.

    JP -

It is working fine on my x64 system, and the help files are there.  You might want to try downloading the files again.

    JB -

You should be able to install the new components without uninstalling the old components.

  • Why is the installer SO LARGE compared to Vista's RSAT? Is it because of Hyper-V remote management tools are larger? Can you make 2 versions, one a slimmed down minimal version? 220 MB is unacceptable for RSAT.

  • Someone -

I do not know why it is so large, but I swear it is not our fault! :-)

  • Installation wasn't very clear on x86 Win 7 RTM.  After running GUI installer I couldn't find Remote Desktops (in search), wasn't listed in snap-ins to add.  Tried the command line installation options (MS must of hired some open source guru to come up w/ that method - those dism command lines would make any Unix old timer proud), still no snap-ins finally on a whim tried add remove windows features and found Remote Desktops already checked.  Clicked ok and then the snap is there.

Maybe I didn't read the instructions good enough but why on earth can't the GUI installer just put an icon in Adminstative Tools and be done with it?

  • Great, thanks for the install advice. I read this blog almost every day, I've incorporated it into my morning-site-viewing-coffee-drinking-wakeup routine. It's really helped me successfully put together and complete virtualization projects on the enterprise level (at my full time) and at various small business (consulting and off-hours gigs) as well as my personal environment.

Thanks for all the topics and comments!

  • Hi,

Because it contains all 36 languages worldwide

    Best Regards,

  • I'm having the same problem as JP - "the update is not applicable for your computer"

Win 7/64 Build 7100. 8GB Ram.  No previous RSATs installed.  Dowloaded it twice, even tried 32 bit version.

    Any ideas?

  • I just tried it on a 32 bit laptop Win 7/32 Build 7100. No previous RSAT here either.  Same error, "the update is not applicable".

    How strange!!

  • Having the same issue too trying to run RSAT install on W7/32 Build 7100

Tried on virtual machine and a physical workstation.

I have downloaded the install called x86fre_GRMRSAT_MSU.msu - the digital signature timestamp is 7th of August.

Anyone have a fix for this?

  • Same here, I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 (V6.1 Build 7100) and I'm getting "update not applicable".  What a drag.

  • To everyone running build 7100 - that is the RC version of Windows 7.  These tools will only install on the RTM version of Windows 7.

  • Is it just me or is calling the RSAT download for x64 architectures

slightly confusing? Took me longer than it should do to realise that was for all 64 bit CPUs not just AMD. Wouldnt x64 be a better label?

    Or am i missing something?
