Every now and again I get pinged by someone behind a firewall or proxy server that claims they can't install Virtual Earth 3D. I have some solutions that might overcome your problems. There WERE two problems with proxies and VE3D - (1) installing over a proxy and (2) retrieving tiles over a proxy once you had installed it. In the latest build of Virtual Earth 3D, the proxy issues SHOULD BE resolved because we've passed control to the browser. In the former build there were proxy settings in the 3D control. You had to go to the "Options" box, find the hidden tab in the 3D settings and fill in your proxy information but that somewhat limited our reach since most people set their proxy once and forget where the heck it even is to change again! So, whatever your browser proxy settings are these are the proxy settings we now use for installing and retrieving tiles for VE3D.
"Yeah, but it still doesn't work for me!"
Well, first things first, make sure it's a Windows OS. We don't yet support Mac OS, Linux, Unix (which is where Mac OS comes from, no? ;)) or anything other than Windows. We do support Windows XP and Vista, but with XP there are some additional components you need to install. These will be downloaded and installed when you install Virtual Earth 3D (which you can do by going to Live Search Maps and clicking on the 3D link in the map navigation).
If you're still having issues installing VE3D or proxy issues and you're on a Windows OS (and you've manually removed any old versions of VE3D in your Windows Control Panel), you can manually install the prerequisites for running VE3D and the actual Virtual Earth 3D control by downloading the components from the following links respectively then installing them from your local drive:
Download the prerequisites, then run it from your hard drive to install (32 bit is most common): http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=72621 (WIC 32 bit) http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=72622 (WIC 64 bit) http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=106132 (.NET Framework 2.0 32 bit) http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=106134 (.NET Framework 2.0 64 bit)
Download the Virtual Earth 3D Control CAB, then run it from your hard drive to install (32 bit is most common): http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=106129 (32 bit) http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=106130 (64 bit)
That should cover it. Now, fly, fly away to Vegas, Dallas, Denver, Seattle, Miami, Phoenix or Vienna to wow yourself with our Version 2 models; or, go to one of the other 300 cities around the world where we have Version 1 models.
